READING, Pa. - Messiah women's lacrosse scored early and often as they cruised to an 18-0 win over Alvernia University on Tuesday afternoon.
Courtney Wagner led the Falcons with five goals ands two assists, while
Gabi Griffith added a pair of goals and four assists. Of note,
Katie Stottlemyer recorded her first career collegiate goal on her first-ever shot. Eleven different Falcons scored in the winning effort.
Kendra Herbenar collected seven draw controls, four ground balls, and four caused turnovers. With those four caused turnovers, the senior now has 47 on the year, which brings her into a tie with Brianne Brennan '09 and Rachel Coyle '12 for most caused turnovers in a single season in program history.
Messiah moves to a perfect 8-0 in MAC Commonwealth and 13-3 on the year, while Alvernia falls to 0-7 in the conference and 0-14 overall.
The Falcons outshot the Golden Wolves 31-5 in the game, including 25-4 on goal. Messiah won 17 of the 20 draw controls, picked up 18 ground balls compared to 11 for Alvernia.
The game started fairly slow as Messiah led just 2-0 after ten minutes with both goals coming from the stick of Wagner. However, Wagner's third goal of the game at the 19:29 mark ignited a run of four goals in a span of 93 seconds that gave Messiah a 6-0 lead with 17:56 to play in the first-half.
The Falcons would score seven more times before the half was over, including
Morgan Reifsteck's second of the season, to take a 13-0 lead into the break.
Alvernia was simply outmatched in all aspects of the game, Messiah scored five more times in the second-half and went on to shut out the Golden Wolves 18-0. Today was the first time that Messiah held an opponent scoreless since just over a year ago, as they blanked Arcadia 16-0 on the road on Apr. 13, 2017.
The Falcons will now look to the MAC Commonwealth Championships that get underway next Wednesday, May 2. As the top seed, Messiah will host a semifinal against the 4-seed that is yet to be determined.
