XML Box Score 2 SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Messiah softball team dropped two games on the road against Susquehanna falling 7-5 in the first game and 5-4 in the nightcap.
Haylee Anders went 4-8 on the day with two runs scored and an RBI, while
Isabel Seise and
Angie Stephano both had two hits on the day.
Carrie Fix suffered the loss in the first game and
Joy Kolakowski in the second.
The Falcons are now 13-11 on the year and are back on the field tomorrow afternoon when they host Alvernia University in a double header beginning at 3:00 p.m.
Game One: Messiah 5, Susquehanna 7
The River Hawks built up a solid 4-0 lead early in the game scoring three runs in the first inning and added the fourth run in the second. The Falcons slowly made a comeback and put some runs up in the top of the fourth when three hitters walked to load the bases. With
Madelyn Yannetti at the plate she doubled to left center to score both
Erin Cressman and Anige Stephano and cut Susquehanna's lead in half 4-2.
Susquehanna had a response, however, as Messiah's pitching struggling in the bottom of the fourth with two walks and then a couple hits by the River Hawks, their lead increased to 7-2. After scoreless innings and down to their last chance Messiah started the inning off with Jaeylyn Harbold earning a walk and then
Carrie Fix ripped a double to score pinch-runner
Morgan Zimmerman.
Haylee Anders then doubled with Fix scoring on the play, whiel Amber Bingmana singled to earn an RBI with Anders scoring but was later thrown out trying to advance on the bases.
The Falcons bats had come alive and the score was 7-5 with a runner still on and the tying run,
Isabel Seise stepped to the plate, but flied out to left field.
McKenzie Tebbs then doubled and with two runners on and the go ahead run at the plate, Anige Stephano hit a fly to left field but it was caught thus ending the game.
Game Two: Messiah 4, Susquehanna 5
Messiah's offense was alive early in this game as they scored four runs in the first inning to take the early lead.
Carrie Fix started the game with a single and then stole second to get into scoring position. After
Haylee Anders reached on an error,
Amber Bingaman singled up the middle to score Fix. The next batter,
Erin Cressman stepped up and delivered a two-run doubled and after advancing to third she was also able to score on a throwing error by the catcher.
In the bottom half of the inning Susquehanna made some noise as they earned back two runs with three hits in the inning to cut the lead 4-2. Then in the second they tied the game up with a two-out rally hitting four consecutive singles off pitcher Kolakowski. The River Hawks kept up the consistency of scoring each inning adding one more run in the third to take a 5-4 lead.
The rest of the game was a tale of tough pitching and defense by Susquehanna as Messiah had limited opportunities to score except in the fifth inning when Anders hit singled and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bingmana. The next two batters, Cressman and Seise, were certainly hitters the Falcons wanted up in the situation but either were able to bring in the run as a fly ball and strike out ended the inning. The Falcons were retired by the River Hawks in the final two innings leading to the 5-4 loss.
