Falcons Sweep Cougars, Finish 9-3 in Conference Play

DALLAS, Pa. - The Messiah College men's volleyball team completed their regular season after the defeated the Misericordia Cougars 3-0 (25-14, 32-30, 25-15) on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons moved to 15-9 overall and 9-3 in the MAC. 

Offensively, Messiah hit a .276 on the match after they terminated 36 kills on 76 attempts and only committed 15 errors. Defensively, the Falcons collected 27 digs and five blocks in their victory over the Cougars. Logan Hunsberger had nine kills to lead the Falcons' attack and Matt Knab, Quay San, and Noah Shreiner all terminated six kills. Will Webb added five kills and three aces for Messiah. Brad Nase collected 29 assists while Caleb Weaver produced 10 digs.

Messiah opened the first set with a 7-4 lead over Misericordia, however the Cougars scored four-straight points to gain an 8-7 lead. The Falcons responded with kills from Noah Shreiner and Quay San and an ace from Shreiner to gain a two-point advantage. The Cougars then tied things at 10 but Messiah launched off to a 9-to-1 run to hold a 19-11 lead. Logan Hunsberger led his team on this run with three kills and two service aces. Both teams exchanged points back-and-forth but Messiah finished with a four-point run at the end of the set to win it 25-14.

The Falcons started game two how they ended game one and had an early 11-5 advantage. However, attack errors proved to be a struggle for Messiah and the Cougars slowly crept their way back into the match. Michael Trygar collected three-straight kills for Misericordia and brought the Falcons' lead down to two points (19-17). Messiah went on a small 3-to-1 run to pull ahead 22-18, but the Cougars responded with a 4-to-1 run and came within one point of the lead. Logan Hunsberger terminated off of Brad Nase's set which gave the Falcons game point, however Misericordia tied things at 24-24 after two attack errors by Messiah. Matt Knab connected and scored to once again pull ahead, but Misericordia tied things up at 25-25 and the battle continued. Messiah had game point on seven different occasions but the Cougars hung around and eventually pulled ahead (30-29) after back-to-back kills by Caleb Bauder. Messiah finally pieced together three-straight points at the end of the game to secure a 32-30 win and went into the third set with a 2-0 lead.

Messiah dominated in the third and final set and hit a game high .500 (11 kills, one error, 20 attempts). The Falcons were very efficient and held an early 14-4 lead over the Cougars, but Misericordia went on a 6-to-2 run to bring Messiah's lead down to six points. Messiah did not allow the Cougars to steal their momentum and continued to build upon their lead by scoring four-consecutive points and pulling ahead 22-12. The teams exchanged points back-and-forth late in the set, but Messiah took care of business and picked up the 25-15 win.

Messiah will be back in action on Wednesday, Apr. 11 when they take on Arcadia University in the MAC semifinal.
