Falcons Fall to Bullets On the Road

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Gettysburg College jumped out to an early lead on Messiah baseball and never looked back on Wednesday afternoon, racing out to an 11-0 advantage before winning by a final score of 15-6.

The result was very different from the first time that the Falcons and Bullets squared off this season, as in their previous meeting on March 8, Messiah shut out Gettysburg 9-0 at home.

Messiah was blanked on the offensive end by Bullet starter Brad DeMartino for the first five innings, until Kyle Wickeneiser continued his torrid stretch with a two-run homer to put the Falcons on the board in the sixth. Wickenheiser had three of Messiah's 11 hits in the game, and was one of two Falcons to have more than one. Chris LaRose added two hits and two RBI.

Messiah falls to 15-21 on the year, while Gettysburg improves to 13-23.

Falcon pitching experienced some struggles in the game, as each of the first three pitchers to take the mound surrendered at least three earned runs. Ben Stewart threw a scoreless seventh with a strikeout and a walk.

Messiah only had one hit through the first five frames, as Wickenheiser doubled to lead off the second inning but was stranded on third after DeMartino struck out the next three Falcons in order. Messiah would double their hit total in the top of the sixth, as Josh Hayner recorded a one-out double before Wickenheiser stepped in and notched his second hit of the game, the two-run home run. However, DeMartino still struck out the side in the sixth around those hits, and would add another punch-out in the seventh to bring his total for the game to 13 over seven innings of work.

After that strikeout, LaRose doubled for the Falcons's fourth hit of the game, all of the extra-base variety. Messiah would get runners on first and third before the inning was over, but a Billy Davis groundout ended the threat.

Trailing 14-2, the Falcons got a few runs back in the eighth, as Wickenheiser, Conner Reyer, and Mark Leach (RBI) all singled to score a run with two outs. LaRose followed with his second double of the game, but with runners on base this time as Leach and Reyer scored to make it 14-5. J.J. Robinson added another single to score LaRose, but Culver flied out to center to end the inning.

Gettysburg added a run in the bottom of the eighth, and Messiah got two men on base in the top of the ninth but were unable to score as the Bullets came away with the 15-6 victory.

The Falcons will wrap up the 2018 campaign on Saturday as they host the Catholic University of America for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
