Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

History for Herbenar as Falcons Advance to Conference Final

GRANTHAM, Pa. - Messiah women's lacrosse outscored Stevenson University 6-1 in the second-half to pull away from the Mustangs and advance to the MAC Commonwealth Championships Final with a 10-4 victory.

Messiah outshot Stevenson 25-19 on the game, including 18-10 on goal. Mckenna Edwards led Messiah on offense with four goals. Kendra Herbenar recorded four caused turnovers to bring her total on the year to 51, breaking the single-season program record of 47 that was co-held by Brianne Brennan '09 and Rachel Coyle '12. The victory was also head coach Heather McKay's 150th at the helm of Messiah women's lacrosse.

With the win, the Falcons advance to the conference championship for the fifth-straight season and tenth time overall, and will face 2-seed Lebanon Valley on Saturday after the Dutchmen defeated 3-seed Albright 11-9.

After eight minutes of back-and-forth action with no goals to show for it on either side, the Mustangs broke into the scoring column first on Hana Tankersley's 10th goal of the season. Jess Hatch tied it up quickly thereafter with her 10th goal of the year at the 20:31 mark, and Courtney Wagner added a free-position goal four minutes later to give Messiah the lead midway through the first-half.

Stevenson's Carly Bowes tied it back up at two just moments later, but Edwards tallied the next two goals of the game on beautiful one-on-one moves around the cage. However, Kiely Bunce managed to beat the buzzer and score with 26 second left to cut the deficit in half as Messiah took a 4-3 lead into the break.

In the first-half, Messiah had plenty more shot attempts than Stevenson, but could not get many to fall. The second period was a completely different story, though, as the Falcons scored on six of their 10 shots.

Annika Johnsen scored the first of the half at the 24:22 mark, followed by back-to-back goals again by Edwards. Abby Howard's score with 10:47 to play made it a 4-0 run for Messiah, but Bowes scored her second goal of the game and team-leading 38th of the season just 16 seconds later to cut the Falcon lead to 8-4.

That was as close as it would get for the rest of the game, though, as Howard and Jamie Bishop each added scores over the final ten minutes and Messiah took the 10-4 victory.
