GRANTHAM, Pa. – Seven second-half goals propelled the No. 5 Messiah women's soccer team to a 9-0 victory over the DeSales Bulldogs on Shoemaker Field Wednesday night. The match featured six different goal scorers for Messiah with
Julia Kyne,
Brooke Firestone, and
McKenzie Swartley each netting braces.
Sunny Gelnovatch,
Ashley Sauder, and
Megan Mansfield each added a single goal.
Swartley's tally in the 35th minute and Sauder's connection in the 86th minute marked the first goals of their career for the pair.
With the victory, Messiah moves to 4-1 on the season and will next be in action when they travel to Pittsburgh to take on No. 10 Carnegie Mellon at 6:00 p.m. this Saturday night.
How It Happened
As mentioned the Falcons scored often en route to their fourth win of the season.
Julia Kyne netted the first of two first-half goals off a feed from
Maddie Kohl for her second goal of the season in the 15th minute. Exaclty 20 minutes later the Falcons turned a one-goal advantage into a two-goal lead when
McKenzie Swartley scored the first goal of her career off a low cross from
Jessie Fisher.
Messiah held that 2-0 lead through halftime before exploding for seven goals after the break.
Julia Kyne scored her second goal of the night with a strike over the keeper on the right endline in the 47th minute. Just over a minute later the Messiah lead became 4-0 after
Sunny Gelnovatch dribbled into the box in the 48th minute and beat the keeper between her legs.
Brooke Firestone then scored back-to-back goals in the 54th and 57th minutes to make the Messiah lead a half dozen.
McKenzie Swartley found her second career goal in the 68th minute off a pass from
Megan Mansfield. Messiah finished off the game with goals from
Ashley Sauder and
Megan Mansfield in the final five minutes of the contest.
Messiah launched 29 shots in the match, including 16 on frame while holding the Bulldogs to just two on the night. The Falcons also earned 13 corner kicks in the match to one for DeSales.
What's Up Next
The Falcons will now hit the road for the first time this season when they head to Pittsburgh to take on No. 10 Carnegie Mellon at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday evening. Last season, the Falcons had to squeak out a 2-1 victory over the Tartans with an overtime goal by
Abby Monko in the 97th minute.
