Falcons Clip Blue Jays in Non-Conference Tilt

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The No. 4 Messiah women's soccer team earned a 4-1 victory over the Elizabethtown Blue Jays on Wednesday evening on the road. The Falcons scored on their first two shots of the game to take an early 2-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the contest. Messiah struck for one more in the half, but the Blue Jays scored in the final two minutes of the opening half to make it a 3-1 Messiah lead at the break.
 
Kayla Herr opened the scoring with her first career goal off a header on a corner from Maddie Kohl in the seventh minute. Three minutes later, Brooke Firestone tallied her eight goal of the season to double the Messiah lead.
 
In the 18th minute, Emily Lockwood found Sunny Gelnovatch to build the Messiah lead to 3-0. As mentioned the Blue Jays had the last quality look in the first-half, scoring in the 44th minute off the foot of Lydia Lawson.
 
After the break, Emily Lockwood added to her assist from the first-half with a tally in the 82nd minute to give Messiah the final score of the contest.
 
Early Lead
The Falcons struck early with a pair of goals in the first ten minutes of the contest. On a corner kick from the right side in the seventh minute, Maddie Kohl sent in a ball to the back post where Kayla Herr leaped for the service and headed a shot into the upper 90 for the first goal of her career. Just three minutes later, Brooke Firestone carried a ball down the left-side and ripped a shot from 15 yards out to give Messiah a 2-0 lead. Firestone's tally was the eight of the season.
 
With Messiah leading 2-0 in the 18th minute, Emily Lockwood found Sunny Gelnovatch for the third goal of the match for the Falcons.
 
Big Moments
At the end of the half, Elizabethtown's Samantha Wanamaker took a shot that was initially saved, but the rebound went to Lydia Lawson at the middle of the six and Lawson tapped in the miss to make it a 3-1 Messiah lead heading into the half.
 
The 3-1 lead remained for the first 35 minutes of the half, until Messiah struck for their fourth tally of the contest. Julia Kyne sent a pass left to Brooke Firestone, who one-touched the ball to the left-side of the six for Emily Lockwood. Her shot from six-yards out found the back of the net and gave Messiah the eventual 4-1 margin.
 
What's Up Next
The Falcons will next host the No. 24 Misericordia Cougars on Saturday evening on Shoemaker Field at 7:00 p.m. Saturday's match will be the fourth game against a National Ranked team this season for the Falcons. Messiah is 2-1 in ranked matches this season.
