Falcons Suffer Setback at York

YORK, Pa. – The Messiah women's tennis team suffered an 8-1 defeat at the hands of the York Spartans on Saturday afternoon. The Flacons earned their lone point of the afternoon in the No. 1 doubles match with an 8-5 victory.
 
The duo of Kaitlyn Russell and Amanda Adams defeated York's top doubles team of Rachel Wagner and Gina Liguori by a score of 8-5 to claim Messiah's first doubles point of the fall through three matches. The match also marked the first time this year that Russell and Adams were paired together in doubles play.
 
In the two other doubles matches, Messiah put up a fight with the pair of Emily Wichert and Robin Schwarzmann falling by an 8-4 score in the No. 2 match and Gabby Brooks/Gracie Estrella dropping the No. 3 match 8-3.
 
 Messiah was shutout in singles play, with York winning all six match, however a pair of matches were extended past the first two sets. At No. 1 singles, Kaitlyn Russell dropped the opening set 6-4, but claimed the second set 6-3 before falling 6-3 in the third set.
 
At No. 4 singles Beka Adams also dropped the opening set 7-6 (4) before forcing a tiebreaker third set with a 6-4 victory in the second set. Adams ultimately fell 10-5 in the match tiebreaker, but put up a sizable fight for Messiah in the match.
 
With the loss, Messiah falls to 0-3 this fall and will next be in action in the MAC Individual Championships on Oct. 20 and 21 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
