Falcons Leave Mighty Macs and Mustangs in Wake on Friday

GRANTHAM, Pa. - The Messiah men's swimming team earned a pair of convincing victories over the visiting Stevenson Mustangs (132-32) and Immaculata Mighty Macs (140-35) in their first home event of the season. Swimming in front of a packed house, Messiah claimed 10 of the 11 events for an impressive showing in Fredricksen Natatorium.
 
Daniel Logan and Eli McCabe each claimed a pair of individual victories to highlight the effort for the Falcons, who moved to 4-6 in duals this season.
 
McCabe earned first-place finishes in the two longest races of the night, by winning the 1000 Free and the 500 Free. First, McCabe won the 1000 Free in a time of 11:27.37 to take the event by just over 13 seconds over Stevenson's Brian Brown. Later in the evening, McCabe won the 500 Free, getting to the wall in 5:24.87. Finishing just behind McCabe was Messiah teammate Joshua Simmons (5:47.27) to claim one of four, one-two finishes for Messiah on the night.
 
In the very next men's event, Messiah took home the top three spots with Daniel Logan leading the pack in the 100 Breast. His time of 1:07.14 was put him ahead of David Welch (1:09.44) in second and Kurtis Platteel (1:11.04) in third.
 
In a three-swimmer field in the 100 Free, Logan controlled the race, winning in a time of 49.14, more than 12 seconds ahead of second place.
 
Ridge Hagar claimed the 50 Free, sprinting to the wall in 22.82 to win the event by more than a second. Mason Kennedy finished second in the event, finishing in 24.24 to give the Falcons the top two spots in the standings.
 
Kurtis Platteel turned in a strong showing in the 100 Back with a time of 57.33, winning the event by more than four and a half seconds over Immaculata's John Batley (1:01.68). Batley also finished second to another Falcon in the 200 IM, getting out touched by Anthony Pompei's time of 2:13.08. Pompei won the event by less than a second over Batley to be one of six different individual winners on Friday.
 
Tyler Wilkinson ran away with the 200 Free victory on Friday with a time of 1:51.94 to claim the event by more than five seconds. David Welch finished third in the event, getting to the wall in under two minutes at 1:59.29.
 
The only event of the night that the Falcons did not win on the men's side was the 100 Fly. Stevenson's Stephen Kratzer claimed the event with a time of 58.15, but Messiah did turn in a pair of strong showings with Mason Kennedy (1:00.12) and Jake Valentine (1:04.86) taking second and third in the event, respectively.
 
The double-dual started with two Messiah teams going back-to-back in the 400 Medley Relay. The team of Simmons, Welch, Pompei, and Wilkinson (4:01.21) nabbed the top spot with a 0.29 second victory over the other Messiah team of Hagar, Valentine, Logan and James Chopka (4:01.50). Messiah then capped their night with a victory in the 200 Free Relay thanks to a time of 1:32.52 from Wilkinson, Kennedy, Pompei, and Hagar.
 
With the pair of victories this evening, Messiah earns their first dual win since at win over Hood at the beginning of November. The Falcons are now 4-6 overall this season and 3-3 in the MAC. Messiah is next in action on Saturday, Jan. 26 when they travel to York College to take on the Spartans at 11:00 a.m.
