Falcons Blank Widener in Road Conference Contest

CHESTER, Pa. - The No. 1 Messiah women's soccer teams scored two goals in each half while blanking the Widener Pride en route to a 4-0 victory on Saturday evening. Brooke Firestone scored twice in the final minutes of the first half while Brianna Seip and Ellie Lengacher connected in the second half for the Falcons.

Messiah held the Pride to just four shots on the night while collecting 27 of their own.

The victory moves the Falcons to 11-1-1 on the season and 2-0-1 in the MAC Commonwealth. Messiah will be back in action this Tuesday when they travel to Lycoming to face the Warriors at 3:30 p.m.

Scoreless Start
After being held scoreless for all 110 minutes of Wednesday's match against Arcadia, Messiah was unable to find the back of the net against the Pride on Saturday for over 40 minutes to being the contest. During the opening scoreless stretch, Messiah recorded 10 shots, putting four on frame. With Widener unable to register a shot in the opening period, it looked like the game would remain tied at 0-0 at the half.

Firestone Tallies Twice
With halftime less than five minutes away and the game still scoreless, Brooke Firestone connected in the 41st minute to put the Falcons on the board. Firestone's goal came thanks to some quick connected passes from Ellie Lengacher and Kayla Herr, who both earned assists on the play.

With the Falcons on the board, Firestone found her second goal of the game just over four minutes later. Ellie Lengacher sent a shot that rattled off the crossbar and Firestone picked up the loose ball, going to the far post with her shot for the 2-0 Messiah lead at the half.

Second-Half Insurance
In the second half, Messiah found some insurance with goals coming in the 69th and 78th minutes from Brianna Seip and Lengacher, respectively. In the 69th minute, Lindsay Haseltine found Seip, who put her third goal of the season on the board. Seip has now scored two goals in conference play and two in her last three games.

With a three-goal lead in the 77th minute, Lengacher put through the fourth and final goal of the night off a feed from Brooke Firestone. Lengacher is now second on the team with six goals, trailing only Firestone's dozen tallies for the team lead.

The Falcons took a total of 27 shots in the game, putting 18 on frame while the Pride took four shots, putting two on goal. All four of the Pride's shots came in the second half.

What's Up Next
With the victory, Messiah moves to 11-1-1 on the season and 2-0-1 in the MAC Commonwealth. the Falcons will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Lycoming to take on the Warriors at 3:30 p.m. The Falcons are 14-0-0 against the Warriors all-time.
