Falcons Net Seven in Shutout Victory over Alvernia

GRANTHAM, Pa. - The No. 1 Messiah women's soccer team scored early and often en route to a 7-0 victory over the visiting Alvernia Golden Wolves on Saturday evening. The Falcons held a 5-0 lead at the break before tacking on two more goals in the second half for the lopsided victory. Messiah held a 30-3 advantage in shots while holding possession for 68% of the game.

Ellie Lengacher was the lone Falcon to tally multiple goals, notching scores in the seventh and 11th minutes.

Brooke Firestone got the scoring started in the second minute with an unassisted tally while Sunny Gelnovatch, Kylie Firestone, Brianna Seip, and Rebecca Ritchie also found the back of the net.

With the victory, the Falcons move to 10-1-0 on the season and will be back in action on Wednesday when they host the Arcadia Knights on Shoemaker Field on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

Fast Start Leads to Big Half
Messiah's relentless pressure in the opening half resulted in five tallies in the first 45 minutes. Brooke Firestone wasted little time getting the Falcons on the board, scoring just two minutes into the contest. On a slotted ball from the midfield, Firestone had her initial shot blocked, before she collected her own rebound and pushed through her 10th goal of the season.

Five minutes later, Ellie Lengacher scored the first of her two goals with a shot from the top of the box to the top right corner of the goal. The tally gave Messiah a 2-0 lead, but Lengacher would strike again in the 11th minute. Sunny Gelnovatch sent a through ball toward the top of the box for Lengacher who split a pair of defenders and lofted a shot over top of the keeper for her second goal in four minutes.

Just five minutes after Lengacher's second score, Sunny Gelnovatch found her moment of brilance from outside the box in traffic. With defenders surrounding her from 21 yards out, Gelnovatch ripped a strike for the fourth tally of the evening for Messiah and her third score of the season.

Kylie Firestone got in on the action in the 27th minute, connecting for the fifth and final tally of the opening half. Her first shot was saved, but the attempt could not be corralled by the Golden Wolves' keeper. Firestone hung with the play and poked the rebound through the crowd for her second career goal and a 5-0 Messiah lead.

Second-Half Insurance
The Falcons continued to control the pace of play in the second half. Messiah held a 14-2 advantage in shots during the period and added a pair of insurance goals off strikes from Brianna Seip and Rebecca Ritchie in the 65th and 70th minutes, respectively.

Seip's tally was her second of the season, while Ritchie's goal was her fourth.
