Falcons Battle Past Lycoming In Williamsport

WLLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The Messiah women's volleyball team defeated the Lycoming Warriors Tuesday night 3-1 (17-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-22). Despite hitting only .135 as a team, the Falcons were able to hold Lycoming to a .109 hitting percentage in the match. Leading Messiah was Kate Preudhomme and Lanae Hunsberger who recorded 11 kills apiece in the match. The win moves Messiah to 3-2 in the MAC Commonwealth and 15-5 overall. The Falcons face-off with the University of Scranton on Friday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. at the Swarthmore College tournament.

Warriors Jump Ahead Early
The Falcons took a quick 3-1 lead in set one before the Warriors forced a timeout after a 5-0 run made it 6-3 Lycoming. The Warriors picked up another point out of the timeout to make it 7-3 before Messiah used three attack errors to cut the lead to one at 7-6. Lycoming increased their lead back to three points at 9-6 before a pair of Payton Manwaring kills helped fuel a 6-1 run to give the Falcons a 12-10 lead. The Warriors then used a 5-1 run to grab momentum back and take a 17-13 lead. Messiah tried to claw their way back, but the Warriors didn't budge and produced an 8-4 run to take the set 25-17 and a 1-0 match lead.

Messiah Roars Back
After committing nine errors in set one, Messiah found their footing in set two. A pair of Hunsberger kills helped give the Falcons a 9-6 lead in the early going of the set. After the Warriors cut the lead down to 9-8, some sloppy play doomed them. Four Lycoming errors helped Messiah to a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 15-8. From this point forward the Warriors never got closer than five down as they dropped the set 25-19, which tied the match up at 1-1.

Falcons Sweat It Out
With the score at 8-6 early in set three, the Falcons snatched the momentum and manufactured a 6-1 run to take a 14-7 lead. Messiah continued to keep the Warriors at bay throughout the game, holding a 21-13 lead before Lycoming began to fight back. A 7-1 run forced a Falcon timeout with the Warriors cutting the lead down to just two at 22-20. An Alysa McDevitt kill out of the timeout cut it to one at 22-21 before Messiah used a Hunsberger kill and a Warrior error to gain some breathing room at 24-21. After a Warrior tally, Kate Preudhomme sealed the deal with a kill to give Messiah a 25-22 set win and a 2-1 lead in the match.

With the score knotted at 4-4 in set four, Messiah soared to a 7-0 run that was led by three Manwaring kills and two Preudhomme kills to give the Falcons an 11-4 lead. Similar to set three, Messiah continued to fight off the Warriors and held a 22-15 lead late in the set before Lycoming started to claw back. Lycoming went on a 7-2 tear to cut the lead to 24-22. Messiah was able to hold them off though, capitalizing on an error to win the set 25-22 and win the match 3-1.
