GRANTHAM, Pa. - In the regular season finale of the 2018-19 campaign, the Messiah wrestling team earned a 31-10 victory over the McDaniel Green Terror on Wednesday night in Hitchcock Arena. The Falcons got off to a quick start with a fall by Sean Redington in the second period at 125 lbs. After the Green Terror earned back-to-back decisions at 133 and 141 lbs., Messiah and McDaniel were even in the team scores at 6-6, but the Falcons claimed the next five bouts to pull away with Stephen Maloney (149 lbs.) and Brian Shermeyer (174 lbs.) picking up bonus points with technical falls.

After the Falcons earned a forfeit victory at 184 lbs., Denny Karas put the cherry on top of the 31-10 victory with a hard-fought 7-6 decision in the final bout of the night.

Messiah's night started with a second period fall by Sean Redington. The junior took a massive, 8-1 lead in the first period after a pair of takedowns and four nearfall points. Two more second-period takedowns had Redington up 12-2 before he earned a fall over McDaniels Robert Kaminski in 3:52.

The Green Terrors' Ryker Eckenbarger (133 lbs.) and Isaiah Edmond (141 lbs.) earned decisions in the next two bouts to pull the overall match even at 6-6. In the 141 lbs. match, Messiah's Nick Nunez fell into a 10-0 hole against Edmond at the end of the first period, but the sophomore battled back and pulled within four thanks to five takedowns in the second and third periods, but his furious comeback fell just short and he dropped the decision 14-10.

Stephen Maloney swung the momentum back in favor of the Falcons in a big way with a dominating 18-1 first-period technical fall. Maloney eared two takedowns and four sets of back points while picking up the technical fall and moving to 29-4 on the season.

Decisions by Kevin Edwards (157 lbs.) and Joshua Paige (165 lbs.) bumped the Messiah lead to 17-6. Edwards claimed a 6-1 decision over McDaniels Wade Bishop after a strong ride on top. Paige also controlled the pace of his match, earning a 10-4 victory that featured three takedowns and a pair of escapes.

At 174 lbs., Brian Shermeyer raced out to a 16-3 lead over Garrett Vandervalk with four takedowns and eight nearfall points in the opening period. A takedown midway through the second period sealed the deal for the sophomore and gave Shermeyer the technical fall by an 18-3 score. The victory is his 26th of the season.

After Ronnie Wuest earned a 13-0 major decision at 197 lbs., Denny Karas concluded the evening with a thrilling 7-6 decision over Ethan Wolf to cap off the 31-10 victory for Messiah. Karas battled back after being taken down early in the opening period with two takedowns later in the match, including one midway through the third period that propelled him to the victory.

With the victory, Messiah wraps up the 2018-19 regular season with a 16-6 record in dual matches. The Falcons will now turn their attention to NCAA Southeast Regionals hosted by Lycoming College on Feb. 22-23. Check GoMessiah.com in the coming weeks for a full preview of the NCAA Regionals.
