Men's Swimming Takes Fifth at MAC Champioinships

YORK, Pa. - Messiah men's swimming wrapped up the 2019 MAC Championships on Sunday night at the Graham Aquatic Center in York, Pa. The Falcons finished the four-day meet in fifth-place in the 12-team field with 302 team points. Albright claimed the men's team title with 740 points while Widener (543 points), Arcadia (435), King's (351.5), and Messiah (302) rounded out the top-five.

Tyler Wilkinson highlighted the effort for the Falcons with All-Conference honors in each of his three individual events. After finishing in the top-three in the 500 Free (4:44.37), 200 Free (1:43.22), an 200 Back (1:55.92) Wilkinson was named the MAC Rookie of the Year for men's swimming. Wilkinson is the third-ever Messiah men's swimmer to be named the MAC Rookie of the Year, following Dakota Schmalz (2015) and Drew Wissler (2010).

Day One Update - Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019
The team of Tyler Wilkinson, Anthony Pompei, Ridge Hagar, and Daniel Logan got the Falcons started with a fifth-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:37.52. Messiah was less than a second out of third-place with Arcadia (1:36.70) and Misericordia (1:37.02) finishing just in front of them.
 
Then in the final event of the session, the group of Wilkinson, Mason Kennedy, Hagar, and Logan took fourth in the 800 Free Relay with a time of 7:03.65. Their time was over 15 seconds faster than their seed time.

Day Two Update - Friday, Feb. 15, 2019
Tyler Wilkinson claimed the first All-Conference honor for the Falcons at the 2019 MAC Championships on Friday evening in the 500 Free. Wilkinson shaved more than three seconds off his prelim time (4:47.72) in the finals for a third-place finish in a time of 4:44.37, claiming Third Team All-Conference accolades in the event. The honor is the first career All-Conference honor for the freshman Wilkinson. Right behind Wilkinson was teammate Daniel Logan, who finished in 4:45.13 to take fourth place in the event.

Ridge Hagar also qualified for an individual Championship final, swimming in the 50 Free on Friday night. The sophomore turned in a time of 21.76 in the prelims to snag the last spot in the finals. His time of 21.88 in the finals, bumped him up one spot to finish seventh overall in the event to claim 12 points for Messiah in the team standings.

In the 200 Free Relay, Messiah's team of Hagar, Logan, Anthony Pompei, and Wilkinson capped off the evening with a time of 1:27.34 to take fifth place in the event.

Day Three Update - Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019
Tyler Wilkinson claimed a second-place finish in the 200 Free to headline the Falcons' effort on Day Three of the MAC Championships. His time of 1:43.22 led him to his second All-Conference honor in as many days after he took third in the 500 Free on Friday. With 209 team points after 12 events, the Falcons currently sit in fifth place out of the 12-team field.

Wilkinson's effort in the 200 Free highlighted the Falcons' best effort in an individual event so far this weekend. Two spots behind Wilkinson was teammate Daniel Logan, getting to the wall in 1:43.76.

Ridge Hagar finished in fourth-place in the 100 Back with a time of 52.68. He was edged by Albright's Joseph Guiliano (52.67) by just one hundredth of a second in the finals, narrowly missing out on an All-Conference.

Messiah's relay team of Kurtis Platteel, Anthony Pompei, Mason Kennedy, and David Welch capped off the Falcons' effort on the day with a ninth-place finish in the 400 Medley Relay with a time of 3:47.23.

Day Four Update - Sunday, Feb. 17, 2019
The Falcons concluded the MAC Championships on Sunday evening, taking fifth in the overall team standings with 302 points. Messiah's Tyler Wilkinson claimed Rookie of the Year honors after finishing the four-day meet with three All-Conference honors including a second-place finish in the 200 Free (1:43.22) and third-place finishes in the 500 Free (4:44.37) and 200 Back (1:55.92). Wilkinson becomes the third Messiah men's swimmer to every win Rookie of the Year in the conference along with Dakota Schmalz (2015) and Drew Wissler (2010).

Wilkinson concluded his weekend with a third-place finish in the 200 Back in a time of 1:55.92 on Sunday evening. With a trio of top-three finishes in the Championships, Wilkinson joins Wissler (2010) and Nolan McArdle (2018) as the only Messiah men to claim three such honors in a single MAC Championship.

Ridge Hagar and Kurtis Platteel also competed in the 200 Back finals with Hagar taking sixth in a time of 1:58.01 an Platteel finishing eighth in 1:58.94.

Mason Kennedy finished the Championships longest race in eighth, to snag a spot on the podium in the 1650 Free with a time 17:06.28. Daniel Logan also earned an eighth-place finish on Sunday, competing in the finals heat in the 100 Free with a time of 48.26.

The Falcons finished up their effort on the weekend with a sixth-place finish in in the 400 Free Relay. The team of Hagar, David Welch, Logan, and Wilkinson got to the wall in a time of 3:13.62.

By finishing in fifth this year at the Conference Championships, Messiah men's swimming has finished in the top-five in the MAC in each of their 11 years as a program.
