Mustangs Handle Falcons in Conference Tilt

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Messiah women's lacrosse team was held to three first-half goals before being shutout after the break by the Stevenson Mustangs on Wednesday night. Stevenson claimed a 14-3 victory in the late season MAC Commonwealth match-up.

The Falcons trailed 9-3 at the break with Jessie Wynne scoring two of the three tallies to lead the offense on the night. Joanna King netted the other Messiah tally in the contest.

The Falcons will wrap-up the regular season on Saturday when they host the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen at 12:00 p.m.

Tight for 20 Minutes
Stevenson started Wednesday night's game with two-straight goals, converting on shots from Caroline Murphy and Dana Stevens in the first 10 minutes of the game. Jessie Wynne netted a free position goal on a player-up opportunity to get Messiah on the board just over 11 minutes into the game.

Stevenson netted the next two goals, but Joanna King stopped the quick Mustang run with her fifth tally of the year, pulling Messiah within two at 4-2 with exactly 14 minutes remaining in the half.

Two and a half minutes later, Hannah Huff scored for Stevenson, but Wynne netted her second of the half with an unassisted tally with 10:53 remaining in the half. Wynne's 10th tally of the year cut the deficit to two at 5-3, unfortunately that was as close as the Falcons would get for the remainder of the game.

Mustangs Pull Away
Stevenson's Carly Bowes scored her 56th goal of the season on a free position shot with nine minutes remaining to start a 9-0 run that last the remaining 39 minutes of the game.

The Mustangs scored three more in the final seven minutes of the half to take a 9-3 lead in the break.

Stevenson scored five goals after the half to earn the 14-3 victory and lock up the top seed in the upcoming MAC Commonwealth Tournament.

Caroline Murphy and Carly Bowes led the Mustangs' offense effort with four goals each. Dana Stevens netted three goals and added four assists for a game-high seven points.

Between the pipes, Messiah's Amber Orner registered double-digit saves for the fourth time this season, finishing the game with 11 saves.

What's Up Next
Messiah will now turn their attention to the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen. The Falcons and Dutchmen will square off in Grantham in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. The game will have serious seeding implications with the Falcons having the possibility of finishing anywhere from second to fourth in the conference depending on Saturday's results.
