Five-Run Fifth Lifts Falcons Past Spartans

YORK, Pa. - A five-run fifth inning gave the Messiah baseball team a 5-2 victory over the York Spartans on Wednesday afternoon. Messiah earned a pair of bases loaded walks from Trent Culver and Chris LaRose to get the Falcons on the board in the fifth before a pair of errors brought three more runs.

York scored a run in the sixth, but the Falcons held off the rally to claim the 5-2 victory.

The Falcons will complete the 2019 season with a non-conference game on the road at Moravian on Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.

Five Runs on Three Errors
Messiah was shutout in eight of their nine trips to the plate on Wednesday afternoon, but they made their one inning of runs count. The Falcons took advantage of three York errors in the top half of the fifth to plate five runs without the benefit of a hit. After two quick outs, Messiah worked five-straight walks to score a pair of runs before Kasey Caras reached on an error by the short stop. The error allowed the two runs to score and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases yet again. A Dalton Miller groundball was mishandled and Messiah plated their fifth run of the inning before a line-out ended the frame.

Pitcher's Dual
Messiah and York combined for just nine hits across nine innings of play with the Messiah pitching staff allowing two runs on five hits. The Spartans scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth on an error on the pitcher and plated another run in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out single through the left side.

Those were the only two runs the Falcons would allow in the game as Carson Spangler, Jorge Zambrano III, Nick Early, and Luke Blasick combined to strikeout 10 in the game while allowing the five hits and six walks.

For York, five pitchers combined to allow five runs (two earned) on just four hits. Eight walks allowed the Falcons to score their five runs to earn the 5-2 victory.

What's Up Next
Messiah will now wrap-up the 2019 season on Thursday afternoon when they travel to Moravian for their final game of the year. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m. in Bethlehem, Pa.
