Wiederrecht In First After Day One Of MAC Heptathlon

CHESTER, Pa. - After Day One of the 2019 MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships heptathlon, Taylor Wiederrecht leads all competitors with 2,701 points through the four events. Samantha Derkas (1,535) and Hannah Reed (1,513) are in 12th and 13th, respectively. Alyssa McMinn set the program record in the women's hammer to finish in fifth place. 

Heptathlon Results
Taylor Wiederrecht got off to a quick start with a first place finish in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.20 seconds (690 points). Wiederrecht finished first in the high jump as well after clearing 1.65m (795 points), six centimeters ahead of the next competitor in the event. Wiederrecht finished second in the shot put after throwing 9.88m to grab 522 points and put her day one score through three events at 2,007. Wiederrecht finished the day with a first place finish in the 200m after storming through the line in 27.22 seconds (694 points). Wiederrecht finished the day with 2,701 points, putting her in first place by 282 points. 

Hannah Reed came through the line in the 100m hurdles in 20.61 seconds (254 points) and cleared 1.29m in high jump (399 points). Reed threw 8.56m in the shot put to add 436 points to her overall score. Reed capped off her day with a time of 30.52 seconds in the 200m (446 points) to finish the day with a score of 1,535 points.

Samantha Derkas ran 19.68 seconds (329 points) in the hurdles and cleared 1.29m in the high jump (399 points). In the shot put, Derkas threw 6.89m to earn 328 points in the event. Derkas finished the 200m with a time of 30.36 seconds (457 points) and ended her first day with a total score of 1,513 points.

Overall Results
Messiah's 4x800m relay team earned the Falcons' first medals of the championship as Emma Johnsen, Leigha Southall, Mikayla Lewin, and Brieanna Hess made their way around the track with a total time of 9:37.15 to finish in second place. Sarah Codd and Cera Gaston highlighted the Falcons' efforts in the 10,000m as they came across the line in 39:20.58 and 40:36.24, respectively. Codd finished the day in fourth place while Gaston finished in eighth. Alyssa McMinn shined for the Falcons in the hammer as she hit a new program record in on her very last attempt of finals to finish the event in fifth place with a throw of 45.46m.

What's Up Next
The Falcons will continue to compete in the heptathlon tomorrow morning at 10:15am with the long jump, javelin, and 800m remaining. Messiah will compete in a variety of preliminary races as well as some trials and finals in the field events.
