YORK, Pa. – The No. 15 Messiah women's soccer team topped York College (Pa.) on the road, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon.
Kristina Akselsen scored her first-career goal in the win as
Brianna Seip added a tally to cement a victory in the Falcons' first MAC Commonwealth contest since the 2019 season.
The win improves Messiah's record to 6-2-1 (1-0-0 MAC Commonwealth) as the Falcons improve to 3-0 all time against York.
The opening half of play proved to be scoreless between the two sides, despite Messiah outshooting the Spartans 8-1. The Falcons earned two corner kicks in the first half, coming up empty-handed in both opportunities. Messiah goalkeeper
Lydia Watkins was tested just once as the Falcons' limited York's offensive chances throughout the entirety of the half.
The game remained scoreless until the 51st minute, when Akselsen scored her first goal as a Falcon, a left-footed, curling shot that found the side netting on the far post. Messiah's first tally was the product of a counter attack, and it proved to be the game-winning goal as the Falcons' defense did not allow a single shot on goal for the rest of the contest.
Seip doubled the Falcons' advantage to 2-0 just eight minutes later in the 59th minute. Seip's tally was her second of the season and third all-time. The Messiah advantage increased to 3-0 in the 71st minute when
Kenzie Spodnik was credited with a score after York misplayed a clearance on the goal line. With a commanding lead over York, Messiah cruised for the remaining 19 minutes of gameplay, clinching the victory, 3-0.
For the game, the Falcons outshot York, 19-4. Of the 19 shots taken, 11 of them were on target. Watkins recorded two saves to claim the shutout victory, as Messiah earned four corner kicks to the Spartans' one corner kick.
