ANNVILLE, Pa. -
Jayneisha Davis stuffs the box score with 13 points, 10 rebounds, five steals, and four assists as the Messiah women's basketball team earned their second victory in as many days against the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen. Joining Davis in double figures were
Leah Springer with 14 points and
Megan Zimmerman with 13 points.
After a chilly start to the evening from the field, Messiah warmed up to a 40.3% from the floor on a 25-62 shooting night. Much like last night, both teams were cold from outside with the Falcons shooting 2-18 and the Dutchmen going 1-9.
The Falcons will take the floor next week when they travel to Stevenson to take on the Mustangs on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. Messiah and Stevenson will play the second half of their home and away series on Friday in Hitchcock Arena on Friday, Feb. 19.
Slowly but Surely
The Messiah Falcons traveled to take on the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen in the second of two-straight games between the two. After beating the Dutchmen by 35 on Thursday night, the Falcons hoped to continue their dominance into tonight. Unfortunately, it was a slow start shooting for both teams with the Falcons making only one field goal in the opening 10 minutes. Messiah shot just 16.7% from the field in the first quarter, but were able to score from the free throw line, going 7-10.
Despite the slow start, the Falcons maintained an 11-8 lead at the end of the first quarter over the Dutchmen.
It takes a Spark
The Falcons took flight in the second quarter and began heating up from the field. Just like she did on Thursday,
Megan Zimmerman got things going in the second quarter with a layup in the paint which would start the Falcons' run. Soon to follow
Leah Springer and
Jayneisha Davis traded buckets for Messiah. The dominating quarter saw Messiah outscore Lebanon Valley 20-7 in the period. The team effort put the Falcons up 31-15 going into the half.
Building off the Momentum
Coming out of the half the Falcons picked up where they left off in the second quarter. Fast break points from
Leah Springer on back-to-back possessions added to Messiah's advantage. Davis' team-high 10 rebounds created offensive opportunities for Springer, Zimmerman, and others to grow Messiah's lead. With a strong start to the second half the Falcons went into the final quarter leading the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen by 24 points at 52-28
Finishing it Out
Entering the fourth, the Falcons kept up the pressure.
Reese Harden added six points and two assists in the final period to lift the Falcons to the victory. Messiah led by as many as 27 points in the final quarter before cruising to the 68-47 win. The victory over the Dutchmen moves Messiah to 2-0 on the season and in the conference. The pair of victories to start the year also extends Messiah's current winning streak to 18 games.
Leading Performers
Three Falcons finished with doubles digits on the night.
Leah Springer led the scoring with 14 points and five rebounds. Following her
Jayneisha Davis had herself a night with 13 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and five steals.
Megan Zimmerman joined the duo in double-digits with 13 points on the evening.
