READING, Pa. - The Messiah women's basketball team claimed their sixth-straight win Friday night in Reading, Pa. with a 65-47 win over the Alvernia Golden Wolves. Four Falcons finished with double-digit points, as
Eleana Eckley led all scorers with 15.
A pair of Falcons in
Jayneisha Davis (14 points, 10 rebounds) and
Leah Springer (10 points, 14 rebounds) finished with double-doubles in the contest. This is Springer's second double-double in as many games and third of the season while Davis recorded her second double-double of the season.
Messiah will look to make it 7-0 when they host the visiting Widener Pride Thursday night, Mar. 4 inside Hitchcock Arena at 7:00 p.m.
Slow First Quarter
Both teams struggled offensively out of the gate, with Messiah trailing Alvernia 7-6 with 4:35 to play in the first quarter. The Falcons then took the lead with four consecutive
Amber High points in the form of a made jumper and two free throws, taking a 10-8 lead into the second quarter.
Falcons Start To Heat Up
Messiah began to find their groove in the second quarter with a quick 15-2 flurry that was capped off by a
Sidney Stutzman layup to make it 25-10. Stutzman had five points during the run while
Leah Springer had four for the Falcons. Messiah cruised into halftime with a 28-15 lead while the trio of Springer, Stutzman, and
Eleana Eckley all had six points at the break. Springer also grabbed eight rebounds in the first half.
Alvernia got off to a great start in the second half, using a 10-4 run through the first six minutes of the third quarter to cut the lead to 32-25. Taliyah Malone hit a pair of threes for the Golden Wolves during the scoring spree. The Falcons shook off the cold start to the second half, as a Stutzman three-pointer sparked a 15-4 run to end the third quarter with a 47-29 lead.
Late Alvernia Push
The lead continued to swell for the Falcons in the fourth quarter, taking a 52-32 advantage after
Sidney Stutzman drained one from downtown. She finished the game with 14 points while making a trio of threes.
They would stretch the lead to 54-32 before Alvernia began to make a late push. They used two Madison Miskar threes to fuel an 8-0 run and force a Falcon timeout, cutting the lead to 54-40 with 4:20 to play. The Golden Wolves would get no closer than this as the Falcons held a steady lead throughout the final minutes and came away with a comfortable 65-47 victory to move to 6-0.
