WESTMINSTER, Md. - The No. 1 Messiah women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the McDaniel Green Terror on Wednesday afternoon. The Falcons held the Green Terror to just one shot in the second half, McDaniel made it count. In the 76th minute Hannah Schepers found the back of the net for the game winner.
Messiah was out shot in the contest 9-7, but put five shots on frame against four from McDaniel.
Courtney Dunlop made three saves between the pipes.
With the loss, the Falcons drop to 2-1-1 on the season. Messiah will be back in action on Saturday when they take on Wilkes on the road at 4:00 p.m.
Scoreless Start
It was a quiet opening half to the contest. Messiah took the first attempt of the game from
Kylie Firestone in the 13th minute, but it was turned away.
Rachael Tirjan also took a shot in the early going, but it was blocked in the 21st minute.
McDaniel took eight shots in the half, with the bulk of those attempts coming in the middle of the period. Two of those attempts went of frame with shots in the 29th and 35th minute saved by
Courtney Dunlop in goal.
Messiah had one final looking at the end of the half, with a shot by
Lindsay Haseltine saved in the 40th minute.
In total, McDaniel held an 8-3 lead in shots heading into the half with neither team finding the back of the net.
Messiah has Chances, but McDaniel Capitalizes
The tone of the match seemed to turn after the half, with Messiah on the front foot. The Falcons came out of the half on the offensive, attempting shots in the 47th, 49th, and 55th minutes. Two of those attempts went on frame, but the Green Terror keeper turned them away to keep the match scoreless.
Another attempt by
Olivia Shuck was saved in the 72nd minute before McDaniel attempted their lone shot of the second half.
In the 77th minute, McDaniel's Maddie Schwartz fed Hannah Schepers, who connected for her fifth goal on the young season. The tally gave the Green Terror the 1-0 lead.
Messiah was unable to register a shot in the final 13 minutes and McDaniel made their goal hold up for the 1-0 victory.

Messiah will look to rebound on Saturday when they travel to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. to take on Wilkes University at 4:00 p.m. The Falcons and Colonels last met on Sept. 17, 2016 with the Falcons earning a 6-0 victory.
