Tough Defenses Hold Falcons in Check

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - The Messiah women's volleyball team opened up Saturday morning with a 0-3 loss against Christopher Newport and followed that up with another tough loss against Randolph-Macon. The Captains won 25-16, 25-13, 25-14 for the 3-0 sweep while the Falcons also dropped their match to the Yellow Jackets via a 0-3 sweep (25-12, 25-16, 25-20) to bring their record to 18-8 on the year.

Lielbriedis led the team in kills in the opening match while it was Feight who led the team in match two against RMC. Swartz led the team in assists in both matches while Eby led the team in digs against CNU. Rovito had a team high 16 digs against RMC. 

The Falcons will travel to Stevenson on October 27, for not only their final conference match of the season, but their final match of the year as well. The match against the Mustangs will be at 7:00 PM in Owings Mills, Md. 

Christopher Newport defeats Messiah 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-14)
Messiah was able to hang around against Christopher Newport for the first half of the set trading points until the Captains took a four point lead at 18-14 which prompted a Falcon timeout. Christopher Newport then went on a 7-2 run after the timeout to take the first set 25-16. The Captains continued to put their foot on the gas and took care of the Falcons easily in the second set winning 25-13. The third set started promising with the Falcons facing an 8-10 deficit before the Captains went on a 13-1 run to take a commanding 23-9 lead. The Captains would close it out 25-14 for the 3-0 sweep of the Falcons. 

Stats
Caitlin Lielbriedis led the Falcons in kills with eight while Mackenzie Feight added seven in the match. Emma Swartz had a team high 16 assists and Maddy Eby led the team in digs with 16. Messiah had a -.018 hitting percentage with 26 attack errors in the three sets against the Captains and will look to get back on track against Randolph-Macon. 

Randolph-Macon defeats Messiah (25-12, 25-16, 25-20)
Randolph-Macon picked up where the Captains left off, taking the Falcons down 25-12 to take the first set. The Yellow Jackets hit an impressive .423 in the set to take the early 1-0 set lead. The second set looked similar to the first when the Yellow Jackets picked up a 21-13 lead late in the set. After a quick three points from Messiah RMC was forced to take a timeout. The Yellow Jackets won four straight points out of the timeout to take the set 25-16 and earn the 2-0 set advantage headed into the third set. The third set was the best set for the Falcons of the day, going point for point with the Yellow Jackets at 11-11 until Randolph-Macon started to pull away and took a 18-13 lead. The Falcons rallied to get the score within two at 20-18 but the Yellow Jackets were too much and prevailed in the set 25-20 to complete the sweep.

Fieght led the team in kills with eight while Emma Swartz once again led the team in assists with 17. Dena Rovito had a team high 16 digs in the match to cap off the day for the Falcons. The Falcons hit .058 in this match which gave them an average of .020 for both matches.

The losses drop the Falcons record to 18-8 on the year. The Falcons will travel to Owings Mills, Md for their final match of the year against conference opponent Stevenson on Thursday, October 27. That match will start at 7:00 PM.
