Regular Season Ends with Convincing Effort over Widener

CHESTER, Pa. - The No. 5 Messiah women's soccer team put together a dominating effort in their final game of the regular season to clinch the top seed in the upcoming MAC Commonwealth Tournament. On Saturday afternoon, the Falcons claimed a 6-0 victory over the Widener Pride. Julia Martin and Korinne Kovatch each scored two goals as the Falcons outshot Widener 22-2 in the match.

Additionally, Kylie Firestone and Kaitlyn Laird found the back of the net in the second half.

Messiah wraps up the regular season with a 15-1-2 overall record and 7-1-0 mark in the conference. The Falcons will host the winner of the Play-In Game on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the MAC Commonwealth Semifinal.

How It Happened
The Falcons quickly made their mark in the match with a goal from Julia Martin just six minutes into the contest. Kylie Firestone assisted on Martin's fifth tally of the season and the Falcons took an early 1-0 lead.

Messiah would double that lead in the 37th minute when Lydia Ring found Korinne Kovatch for her first of two tallies on the afternoon. Kovatch's first goal of the match was also her fifth goal of the season.

The Falcons held that 2-0 lead into the second half while outshooting the Pride 10-1 in the opening half. Of their 10 shots, Messiah put six on frame in the first 45 minutes.

It was Julia Martin again 15 minutes into the second half adding to the Falcons' lead. Off a feed from Rachael Tirjan, Martin found the back of the net for her second-straight multi-goal game. Martin had scored two goals in the first 16 games of the season, but has netted four in the last two matches.

Just eight minutes later, Kylie Firestone scored her seventh goal of the season, netting an unssasited tally in the 69th minute.

Kaitlyn Laird and Korinne Kovatch each netted unassisted tallies in the final 10 minutes to conclude the scoring on the afternoon and help Messiah to a 6-0 shutout victory.

What's Up Next
With the victory, Messiah concludes the regular season with an overall record of 15-1-2 and will now turn their attention to the MAC Commonwealth Tournament where they are the top seed. Messiah wrapped up the conference season with a 7-1-0 record but did earn the top seed in the tournament where they will take on the winner of the Play-In Game on Wednesday in the MAC Commonwealth Semifinals at 7:00 p.m. on Shoemaker Field.
