GENEVA, N.Y. – On Tuesday afternoon, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) announced their 2022 Division III All-American Teams. In total, 48 student-athletes where honored with Messiah's
Ashlyn Smith named to the Second Team as a forward.
Smith's All-American nod adds to a long list of accomplishments following the 2022 season. In late November, Smith was named a First Team All-Region and prior to that, she was named First Team All-MAC Commonwealth and the Offensive Player of the Year for the Conference.
The Second Team All-American honor is the first national honor of Smith's career and the 63rd All-American honor in Messiah field hockey history.
She has scored 15 goals and added nine assists as Messiah's leading offensive threat. A starter in all 18 games this season, Smith has scored in 10 different matches netting multiple goals on five occasions. Smith scored two goals on five different occasions, including back-to-back games with two goals against Ursinus (Sept. 28) and Widener (Oct. 1). She also added a two-goal game in the MAC Commonwealth Semifinal against Albright. Her 15 goals lead the team, but Smith also is the team-leader in assists with nine. She dished out a season-high three in a 7-0 victory at Eastern on Oct. 8.
Smith helped the Falcons to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament this season with an overall record of 17-3. Messiah also claimed their 15th-straight MAC Commonwealth Championship with a 2-0 victory over York on Nov. 5.
