Messiah Eases Through Hood, Clinches Top Seed in Conference Tourney

GRANTHAM PA, - The No. 11 Messiah women's basketball team got their 20th win of the year on senior night on Tuesday, taking down the Hood College Blazers 74-29. Morgan Adams led all scorers with 19 points while Leah Springer added 18 points and eight rebounds. With the victory, Messiah clinches the top seed in the upcoming MAC Commonwealth Tournament that will take place next week. The Falcons are slated to host one of the four quarterfinal contests on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at a time to be determined.

The win brings the Falcons record to 20-2 and 14-1 in the conference. Their final regular season game is on Feb. 19, at Widener. That game takes place at 1:00pm in Chester, Pa.

First Quarter, Messiah leads 21-14
Messiah scored the first seven points of the game to go up 7-0 and would never trail again. The first four and half minutes saw incredible defense from Messiah, allowing zero points until Hood finally got on the board with five and a half to go. At the 4:27 in the first quarter, a 12-2 Messiah lead prompted a quick Hood timeout. The Blazers would go on a short 6-2 run before Mike Miller used a 30 second timeout with under two minutes to go. Messiah would close out the first quarter with a 21-14 lead. Hood shot 60% from the floor while Messiah shot 47% while attempting nine more shots. Reese Harden led Messiah scorers with seven while Leah Springer added six. Jenna Davis-Hans led Hood with four points. 

Halftime, Messiah leads 35-15
Both teams struggled mightily in the second quarter, shooting a combined 14% from the field. Messiah used an 10-1 run to go up 31-15 with four minutes to go in the half before a Hood timeout stopped play. Hood would continue to struggle and would only have that lone point to show for in the second quarter courtesy of a free throw. Messiah outscored Hood 14-1 in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 35-15 lead. Messiah shot 4/15 from the field (26%), while Hood went 0/13. Springer led all scorers with ten points while Harden tacked on eight points. Leading scorers for Hood were Jenna Davis-Hans and Kayla Watkins-Harvey with four each. 

Third Quarter, Messiah leads 60-21
A quick six points from Messiah to make the game 41-15 with seven and a half to go led to a Jack Mehl full timeout from Hood. The Falcons would continue to command the quarter with Springer once again leading the way with eight additional points as well as Morgan Adams, who scored six in the quarter. Messiah outscored Hood 25-6 in the quarter to go up 60-21. Messiah shot 60% from the floor in the quarter. Springer led all scorers with 18 points and would not see the court in the fourth quarter. 

Final, Messiah wins 74-29
Morgan Adams added on a quick six points at the start of the fourth as well as a layup from Amber High to make the game 68-23. Messiah tacked on a few more points and won the game 74-29.

Final Stats
Messiah shot 45% from the field in the entire game while Hood shot 25%. The Falcons also out-rebounded the Blazers 43-27 on the night. Adams led all scorers with 19 points while Springer added 18 points, eight boards, and six assists. Morgan Zimmerman also scored ten on the night. For Hood, three scorers tied for a team lead with six points each.

The Falcons record improves to 20-2 and 14-1 in the conference. Their final regular season game will be against Widener on February 19, at 1:00pm. The game will be held in Chester, Pa.
