Men's Track & Field Impresses At The Armory

NEW YORK CITY, N. Y. – The Messiah men's track and field team competed in the NYC Armory DIII Invitational at The Armory in New York City, N. Y., on Friday afternoon. Brendan Provan issued the top performance of the day for the Falcons, earning the top mark in the triple jump (14.05m). Provan's mark earns third-best in Messiah men's indoor track and field history. Logan Horst claimed a second-place finish in the 3000m, finishing with a time of 8:35.01, as Derek Heisey recorded a height of 1.90m, placing fourth overall.
 
Overall, the Falcons competed well amongst a group of competitive teams, registering several individual improvements.
 
Read below for the highlights of the meet:
 
60m Dash
Both Joshua Horst and Ezra Lee represented the Falcons in the 60m dash. Both sprinters turned in solid performances as Horst finished with a time of 7.61s while Lee crossed the line in 7.81s. Overall, Horst finished seventh overall out of 18 sprinters in the unseeded section of the event.

60m Hurdles
Messiah was well-represented in the 60m hurdles event. Four Falcons competed, as Andrew Schott, John Steele, Joel Rhinehart, Matthew Puleo were four of the 15 total sprinters in the preliminaries. Schott (8.98s), Steele (8.98s), and Rhinehart (9.28s) all qualified for the finals. Puleo just missed the qualifying mark, finishing just 0.06s behind fellow Rhinehart for the finals qualification.
 
Schott, Steele and Rhinehart all performed well in the finals. Schott, who finished fourth out of 16 runners in the 60m hurdles finals at the Mini-Dip Invitational in Lancaster, Pa. last week, finished third overall with a time of 8.84s. Steele finished right behind Schott, achieving a mark of 8.98s. Finishing sixth overall was Rhinehart (9.16s) to round off a quality event for Messiah.
 
400m
Aedan Wilkinson, Derek Heisey, and Connor Daudt competed in the 400m. Both Wilkinson and Heisey improved on their marks from last week's competition. Wilkinson, crossing the line in 52.58s, improved on his time by over a half-second (0.33s) while Heisey improved on his time by 0.96s, finishing with a time of 52.76s. Wilkinson and Heisey placed eighth and ninth overall, respectively, while Daudt finished 12th out of a total of 36 sprinters with a mark of 53.32s.
 
800m
Nathan Kimmel was the lone Falcon competing in the 800m. Kimmel turned in a strong performance, placing tenth overall in a field of 42 runners with a time of 2:00.39.
 
1-Mile
Josiah Moyer led Messiah in the 1-mile event. Finishing sixth overall with a time of 4:28.20, Moyer paced the Falcons in the event. Moyer improved upon his 1-mile mark from last week by just under one second (0.44s). Josiah McCarthy, Josh Bauman, and Ray Truex all competed in the event as well. McCarthy placed 13th overall with a mark of 4:35.69 as Bauman (4:37.98) and Ray Truex (4:40.14) each turned in quality performances. Bauman, who also competed in the 1-mile last week (4:45.27), made an improvement on his time.
 
3000m
The 3000m event was a strong one for the Falcons. Horst earned himself a second-place finish with a time of 8:35.01, improving on his season record, as Andrew Hutchinson placed fourth overall, crossing the line in 8:43.74. Noah Calisti also earned himself a top-10 finish, notching a time of 8:48.20, placing eighth. In addition to the three top-10 performances, Isaac Covert turned in a quality performance as well, placing 11th with a mark of 9:00.07.
 
Weight Throw
Hoyt Lechthaler competed in the weight throw, representing the Falcons with a mark of 9.57m. The mark was good for 12th overall out of 16 total throwers. The first-year made his weight throw debut, recording a quality mark.
 
Triple Jump
Provan's triple jump performance was the highlight of the meet for the Falcons. With a mark of 14.05m, Provan placed first overall out of 13 jumpers, earning the third-best mark in Messiah men's indoor track and field history. Provan achieved his top mark on his fifth attempt, topping his previous personal-best mark of 13.98m.
 
High Jump
Heisey represented Messiah well in the high jump, leaping to a height of 1.90m. Heisey placed fourth overall with his top mark as Schott turned in a quality performance, topping out at 1.80m.
 
Shot Put
Two Falcons competed in the shot put, Gavin Dunketon and Lechthaler. Dunkerton placed 13th overall (9.17m) as Lechthaler placed just behind his teammate, earning 14th overall with a mark of 9.03m.
 
What's Next
Messiah travels to Susquehanna University next Saturday, Feb. 12, competing at a time to be determined.
