GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Messiah softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep on the road today at Arcadia University, dropping Game One to a walk-off double, 2-1, and falling short in Game Two, 1-0.
Madison Walter started Game One, pitching 6.1 strong innings while striking out five batters.
Lydia Collison made the start in Game Two, also striking out five batters over six innings pitched.
The doubleheader sweep drops the Falcons' 2022 overall record to 10-6 ahead of MAC Commonwealth play, beginning this Saturday (Mar. 26) at Eastern University.
Game One – Arcadia 2, Messiah 1
The Falcons' offense was relatively quiet throughout much of the contest despite plating a run in the top of the second inning. The run-scoring knock came off the bat of Gohn, an RBI-triple to plate
Hannah Dyer to give Messiah a 1-0 edge. The two-out RBI was the first-year's fifth of the season. The Knights answered promptly in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on a one-out RBI-double.
McKenzie Shannon recorded a hit for the Falcons in the top of the sixth inning, the sophomore catcher's 12th hit of the season.
Arcadia won in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the seventh inning after pushing the leadoff runner to second base following a well-executed bunt. With a runner on second base and just one out, Madi Costigan laced a hard-hit double to the right-center gap, plating the winning run.
Game Two – Arcadia 1, Messiah 0
The Falcons suffered similar offensive woes in the second game of the doubleheader, falling to the Knights, 1-0.
Alexa Burger and Collison each recorded hits for the Falcons in the game. Burger, who notched a single as the first batter of the game, has now hit safely in six out of the last eight contests.
Messiah threatened in the top of the third inning, having runners reach first and second base after Burger worked a walk and
Ali Wagner reached on a catcher's interference call. The Falcons had an opportunity to take the lead, but Juliana Presto worked out of the jam by getting Shannon to pop out.
Arcadia scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when Allison LaRochelle hit a one-out, RBI-single to center field. The Knights' starting pitcher, Presto, cruised throughout the entirety of the game, needing just one run to earn the victory. The sophomore pitcher issued a complete-game shutout, striking out an impressive 15 Messiah batters.
