How It Happened
Messiah scored two runs in the bottom of the first on a
Joshua Ammons single to left field. The Falcons set the table with a leadoff single from
Reed Wagner and a double from
Kasey Caras to put two in scoring position with no outs. After a fly out, Ammons knocked a single to left that was misplayed and allowed two runs to scamper home for a 2-0 Messiah lead.
It turned out that would be all the Falcons would need, but they added a third run in the bottom of the fifth.
Thomas Ziegler walked to lead off the fifth and later came home on a wild pitch to give Messiah a 3-0 lead.
Penn State Behrend dented the board for the first time in the top of the eighth when the loaded the bases with two away. A single brought home one run, but that would be all the Lions could get as a groundout to third base ended the inning with the bases loaded.
Messiah quickly responded with a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-1 lead. After a strikeout to start the inning, an error put
Joshua Ammons on first. A hit by pitch put two Falcons on the bases and a double steal advanced the Falcons to second and third with one away.
Dustin Isanogle then singled home
Joshua Ammons and
Clayton Roberts for a four-run cushion.
After coming on in the eighth,
Dennis Snyder tossed a perfect ninth inning to slam the door and give Messiah the 5-1 victory.
