Falcons Fly Past Captains in Second Half

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The No. 15 Messiah women's lacrosse used a stellar second-half to hold off the Christopher Newport Captains by a final score of 15-6. Messiah scored the last eight goals of the contest, holding the Captains to just one second-half goal en route to the non-conference victory.
 
Amanda Wadsworth and Emma Lytle led the Falcons with four goals each as five different Falcons registered multiple goals in the victory.
 
With the win, Messiah improves to 7-3 on the season and will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Alvernia to take on the Golden Wolves at 4:00 p.m. in a MAC Commonwealth contest.
 
Level Opening Period
The Falcons and Captains played a level opening quarter with each team connecting for three goals. Amanda Wadsworth got the Falcons off to a quick start, scoring the first of two first-quarter goals on Messiah's opening possession, just 52 seconds into the contest.
 
Christopher Newport's Kendall Krause scored back-to-back goals to build a 2-1 lead with 6:29 remaining in the period.
 
Wadsworth swiftly responded with her second goal of the period to level the tilt at 2-2. After a Christopher Newport tally, Emma Lytle tied the game once again as time expired at the end of the period.
 
Tight Game Continues
Over the first 10 minutes of the second quarter, Messiah and Christopher Newport each netted a pair of goals with Ehryn Groothoff and Grace Gormley scoring for the Falcons. With five minutes remaining before the half, the game remained tied at 5-5. In the final 30 seconds of the period, Emma Lytle scored her second goal of the game to push the Falcons in front. After Grace Gormley grabbed the draw control, Rachel Delate found herself with some space to navigate in the final second of the period. Delate scored from the right side and Messiah took a 7-5 lead heading to the half.
 
Falcons Open Up Lead
In the first five minutes of the second half, Christopher Newport closed the Falcons' lead to just one at 7-6, but Messiah responded by scoring the final seven goals of the game to earn a 14-6 victory. During the massive second-half run, Emma Lytle, Amanda Wadsworth, and Rachel Delate each scored twice as the Falcons finished the game with their largest lead of the game at eight goals.
 
Amanda Wadsworth highlighted the run with back-to-back goals just 10 seconds apart. Wadsworth scored her third and fourth goals of the game with 7:43 and 7:33 remaining in regulation.
