Falcons Fall Short Against Mustangs

GRANTHAM, Pa. - The Messiah baseball team was bested by the visiting Stevenson Mustangs, 5-1, at Starry Baseball Field on Wednesday afternoon. Despite the loss, first-year catcher Dustin Isanogle had a phenomenal day at the dish, reaching base in all four plate appearances with three hits and a walk. The Falcons' bullpen combined for six scoreless innings, totaling six strikeouts.

With the loss, the Falcons' overall record drops to 18-18 (7-6 MAC Commonwealth)

Stevenson got on the board in the top of the first thanks to a couple singles that brought in a run to take a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half of the first the Falcons got back-to-back singles to lead off the inning from Wagner and Isanogle, with both runners advancing to second and third via stolen bases at the next at bat. A strikeout and a walk later, the bases were loaded with Zercher at the dish. Zercher would ground into a double play to end the threat.

Stevenson struck again in the top of the second with a two run double down the left field line to make the lead 3-0 headed into the bottom half of the inning. It would stay that way going into the top of the fourth inning, until the Mustangs put two more runs on the board to make it a 5-0 game. The Falcons had runners on first and second with one down in the bottom of the fourth with Roberts at the plate. Wagaman got caught stealing third on a double steal and then Roberts lined out to the left fielder to end the inning.

Messiah's bullpen shined in the back half of the game, not allowing a single run to score. Nathan Stein provided the bulk of the work, pitching three shutout innings while striking out two batters. Thomas Ziegler struck out a season-high three batters behind 2.1 innings of work while Paul Hansel recorded two outs to close out the eighth inning.

The Falcons, despite plating a run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a throwing error, were unable to muster a comeback. Messiah dropped the contest, 5-1, falling short in its fourth-consecutive conference tilt. Despite the loss, four different Falcons hit safely, highlighted by Isanogle's three hits.
