Softball Splits Doubleheader At Alvernia

READING, Pa. – The Messiah softball team split a road doubleheader at Alvernia University on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons won an eight-inning Game One, 3-2, and dropped Game Two in walk-off fashion, 3-2. Madison Walter pitched seven strong innings in Game One, earning her twelfth victory of the season as seven different Falcons hit safely in the Game Two loss.

With the doubleheader split, Messiah's overall record stands at 25-13 (11-5 MAC Commonwealth), qualifying for the top seed in the upcoming MAC Commonwealth Tournament.

Game One – Messiah 3, Alvernia 2 (8 inn.)
The Falcons edged out a Game One victory over the Golden Wolves behind quality hitting at the top of the lineup. Elianna Litwin led off for the Falcons, recording three hits, including two doubles. Litwin scored twice for the Falcons and tallied an RBI in the win Hannah Dyer also registered a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 at the dish with an RBI. Litwin and Dyer accounted for five of the Falcons' six hits as Joy Hedrick also hit safely, a two-out single to left field.

Hedrick's hit sparked a two-out rally in the second inning, setting the stage for Litwin and Dyer to record consecutive hits to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead. Olivia Denmark provided the other RBI for Messiah, plating a run on an RBI-groundout in the first inning.

Walter shined in the circle for Messiah, earning her 12th win of the season behind a complete-game effort. Walter went the distance for the 16th time this season, striking out eight batters while allowing just two hits.

Game Two – Alvernia 3, Messiah 2
Messiah looked to complete the sweep with a Game Two victory, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Dyer got things going with a double as the second batter of the game. In the following at-bat, McKenzie Shannon ripped an RBI-double to left field, scoring Dyer. The extra-base hits kept coming for the Falcons as Denmark hit a double of her own, plating Shannon to give Messiah a two-run edge.

Lydia Collison made the start in the circle for Game Two, cruising through the first inning with two strikeouts. The Golden Wolves drew even in the bottom of the second inning, scoring the game-tying runs behind one hit and two Messiah errors. Alvernia kept traffic on the bases throughout the inning, putting pressure on both Collison and the Falcons' defense. Through two innings of play, the two sides were knotted up at 2-2.

Collison worked out of danger in the bottom of the third inning as the Golden Wolves put two runners on base with two outs. Alvernia had a chance to take its first lead of the doubleheader, but Collison was able to induce an inning-ending popout.

The Falcons recorded a hit in the third and fourth inning, but were unable to plate the go-ahead run. Messiah's bats fell silent as Alvernia won in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the seventh, scoring the winning run on an inside-the-park home run.

Despite the loss, Messiah had seven different players record hits.
