SUNDAY UPDATE
Due to rain the second day of championships has been cancelled. The Falcons finished with three singles players and two doubles teams advancing to the semifinals.
The Falcons host Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday, October 1 at 2PM.
SATURDAY
WILKES-BARRE, PA - The Messiah men's tennis team had a great showing on the first day of the MAC Individual Tournament. Wilson, Rose, Gingerich, Baker and Anderson all advanced to day two tomorrow morning in either singles or doubles.
Wilson/Rose and Baker/Gingerich found success in doubles, each winning two matches and advancing to the semis.
Wilson, Rose and Anderson all won their singles matches on the day, earning them a berth in the action tomorrow.
Action will begin at 8AM tomorrow morning, an hour earlier than the original start time.
CHASE WILSON
Wilson teamed up Rose in doubles and kicked off the morning with a thrilling 8-7(3) pro set win against Wilkes in the #1 bracket. 20 minutes later, they followed that up with an 8-6 win over Stevenson to clinch a spot in the semifinals tomorrow. Wilson wasn't done, winning both his first round singles matches with ease. He took down Hood 6-3, 6-3 and then ran through Arcadia 6-1, 6-0 to also clinch a semifinal berth.
CONNOR ROSE
As mentioned, Rose teamed up with Wilson and advanced to the semifinals on two close doubles win. In singles at #2, Rose took care of Eastern 6-0, 6-1 and then found himself in a third set tiebreak against King's in the second round. Rose prevailed winning 6-4, 3-6, (10-5). Of note, Rose was down in the first set 3-4 before winning three straight games to close out the set.
MICHAEL SELL
Sell teamed up with
Michael Niemi in the #3 bracket and fell to Stevenson 2-8. Sell then played LVC in a first round matchup in the number three bracket which saw the match go to a third set tiebreak. Sell lost the tiebreak and the match, 6-7(6), 6-4, (3-10).
JOSH GINGERICH
Gingerich teamed up with
Jonathan Baker in the #2 doubles bracket and promptly stomped their way into the semis. After throttling Albright 8-1, they continued their downhill attack on DeSales, winning 8-2. Gingerich fell in his first round singles match in the #4 bracket to York College 3-6, 2-6.
JONATHAN BAKER
The aforementioned tandem of Baker and Gingerich rolled into the semis in the second doubles bracket and Baker found similar success in his first singles match. In the #5 bracket, Baker beat Arcadia 6-0, 6-1 which set him up for a quarterfinal match against Stevenson. After winning the first set, Baker dropped the second set in addition to the third set tiebreak in a back and forth 6-3, 1-6, (9-11) battle.
ANDREW STAPP
Joining forces with Anderson in the #4 doubles bracket, they fell 3-8 in the first round. Stapp also found himself in a third set tiebreak in the #6 bracket but fell 6-4, 5-7 (3-10) to Stevenson.
CARL ANDERSON
As mentioned, he teamed up with Stapp in the number four bracket in doubles. In the number seven singles bracket, Anderson received a bye into the quarterfinals and then won said quarterfinal matchup against King's, winning 6-2, 6-3.
MICHAEL NIEMI
Niemi paired with Sell in the #3 doubles bracket at lost 2-8.
