Falcons Start Strong With Two Victories to Open Season

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Messiah women's volleyball team started off its season on the right foot by going 2-0 in their first action of the 2022 season on Friday evening at the Battlefield Invitational. The Falcons defeated Penn State Altoona 3-1 (25-12, 25-21, 16-25, 25-18) and took down Gallaudet in straight sets (25-18, 25-17, 25-15).
 
Match One – Messiah defeats Penn State Altoona 3-1
 
The Falcons kicked off their season with a 3-1 win over Penn State Altoona in the first match of the night by a score of 3-1 (25-12, 25-21, 16-25, 25-18). On the attack for Messiah, Mackenzie Feight racked up 16 kills to lead the squad, followed by Caitlin Lielbriedis with 12 of her own. The Falcons totaled 51 kills in the four-set match.
 
Emma Swartz picked up 34 of the 41 assists in the contest for the Falcons and also led the squad with 12 digs. Swartz, Rachel Garratt (11), Maddy Eby (10), Mackenzie Feight (8), and Caitlin Lielbriedis (6) recorded 47 of the team's 52 digs on the night. The Falcons also tallied five service aces.
 
Match Two – Messiah defeats Gallaudet 3-0
 
Messiah continued its strong start to the season by defeating Gallaudet in straight sets (25-18, 25-17, 25-15) in the Falcons' second match of the young season. Mackenzie Feight once again led the way for the Falcons, this time with nine of the team's 32 kills. Chayney Barnhart (8), Anna Weldon (5), Caitlin Lielbriedis (5), Emma Swartz (4), and Julia Bowen (1) contributed the rest of the kills on the Messiah attack. Bowen's kill was her first as a member of the Falcons.
 
Emma Swartz led the squad with 23 assists and also chipped in six digs. Maddy Eby's 16 digs led the Falcons in the match, followed by Caitlin Lielbriedis with 12. Messiah picked up five service aces in the match.
 
Up Next
The Falcons will play two more matches at the Battlefield Invitational on Saturday, September 3. Messiah will face Penn State Mont Alto and Catholic University of America to wrap up its opening weekend. The Falcons then play their first home conference match on Wednesday, September 7 against the Flying Dutchmen of Lebanon Valley.
