Spartans Prevail Despite Late Falcons Rally

YORK, PA – Despite a late comeback in the second half, the Spartans held on to knock off the Falcons 62-58 in a close conference battle. Arkese Claiborne led the team with 18 points while Bryce Coletti and Tyler Penley each had a team high nine boards.
 
The Falcons will be back on the floor on Jordan Court in Hitchcock Arena on Saturday, January 28 when they host the visiting Albright College Lions.
 
Action
The first half was well contested, with the teams knotted at 18 at the 10:34 mark of the first half. York would lead by as much as six at 27-21, but Messiah rallied as a buzzer beater tip-in from Dylan Cuperus to cut the deficit to two at the half. York led 35-33 at the break.
 
The Spartans came out of the break on a 6-0 run to take an 8-point lead less than three minutes into the second half. At one point, York led 47-37, but Messiah used an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to two with 8:43 to go. The Falcons took the lead at the 6:17 point on an Arkese Claiborne dunk as the Falcons led 50-48. It was a 13-1 run that the Falcons went on to take the two point advantage. With under two minutes to go, York led 57-56.
 
After trading buckets, the Spartans were back on top 59-58 with under a minute to go. A missed three from Penley followed by flop technical foul on Penley gave York a free throw to take the lead to 60-58. A floater from York stretched the lead to four to make it a two-score game with six seconds to go to put the game out of reach. The Spartans won 62-58.
 
Arkese Claiborne led the Falcons with 18 while Bryce Coletti added 12. Coletti and Tyler Penley led the team in rebounds with nine each. Messiah shot 39% from the floor and 23% from beyond the arc.

The loss increases the losing streak to five and takes Messiah's record to 8-11 and 3-7 in the conference. The Falcons will host the Albright College Lions on Saturday, January 28 at 6:00 PM. That game will be held on Jordan Court in Hitchcock Arena in Grantham in an attempt to split the season series with the Lions. Earlier this season, Albright beat Messiah 79-63 back on December 10 in Reading, Pa.
