No. 4 Field Hockey Stomps Mustangs

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Messiah University field hockey team put forth another dominate effort to defeat Stevenson University 8-1 on Wednesday night. The Falcons used seven different goal scorers to defeat the Mustangs. Madi Johnson led the Falcons offense with two goals on the night. Nicole Shank and Leah Bryner each tallied two assists. Hailey Womer also added in a goal and an assist. Jaden Keister earned the win in goal for the Falcons and made three saves.
 
Up next, the Falcons travel to Chester, Pa. to take on the Pride of Widener University on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 1:00 p.m.

First Quarter
The Falcons offense started strong with an early scoring opportunity in the seventh minute. Kelsey Heltzel worked the right-side of the end line and sent that a pass across to the far post. Madi Johnson was there waiting for the pass and tapped the ball into an open net to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The Falcons offense continued to push the tempo with another great chance in the 10th minute. On a penalty corner, Jenna Lutz sent the ball into play to left side of the circle to Teagan Murrie. Murrie and Lutz played it back to each one more time and then Murrie ripped a blistering shot that found the back of the goal and gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead at the end of the first.
 
Second Quarter
The Falcons continued the offensive barrage just two minutes into the second quarter with a penalty corner. Jenna Lutz sent the ball back into play to Nicole Shank, who was just below the 25-yard line. Shank ripped a shot pass towards the goal and Hailey Womer got a stick on it and tipped it past the Stevenson goalkeeper to put the Falcons up 3-0. After some good defensive play, the Falcons looked for another scoring opportunity in the 28th minute. Hailey Womer dribbled the ball into the circle and looked to send a pass into the middle. After the pass was deflected, Womer got the ball back and worked towards the end line. She then sent a pass right in front of the net and Mallory Kline was there to send a shot into the back of the goal and give the Falcons a 4-0 lead at the half.
 
Third Quarter
The Falcons continued the offensive barrage with another scoring chance in the 35th minute with another penalty corner opportunity. Jenna Lutz sent the corner into play to Nicole Shank. Shank ripped a shot that bounced around off a couple of defenders and the ball found its way back to Lutz and she tapped the ball into the goal for another Falcons goal. The Falcons offense was not done yet. Just two minute later, the Falcons went back on the attack. After a Mustang turnover, the ball found Aubrey Clark's stick at the top of the circle. Clark sent a shot towards the goal, but the Stevenson goalkeeper made the save. The ball trickled around the goalkeeper, and Leah Bryner pulled the ball from the crowd and sent a pass to Madi Johnson right in front of the net and Johnson sent a one-timer into the goal for her second on the night, In the 43d minute the Mustang offense got on the board. After being held shotless for the first-half and most of the third, Lauren Shultz sent a shot into the back of the goal to make the score 7-1. The Falcons quickly answered back with a Carrie Bair goal from Nicole Shank to push the Falcons lead back up to seven at the end of the third.  
 
Fourth Quarter
The Falcons wasted no time in adding to their lead at the start of the fourth quarter. After receiving a pass near the top-right of the circle, Leah Bryner sent a pass across the to the middle of the circle to Megan North. North gathered the ball and sent a shot into the bottom-right corner to increase the Falcons lead to 8-1. Both teams held each other scoreless for the remaining time on the clock to put the final score at 8-1.

Madi Johnson led the Falcons offense with two goals. Hailey Womer and Jenna Lutz each tallied a goal and an assist. Nicole Shank and Leah Bryner each dished out two assists. Teagan Murrie, Mallory Kline, Carrie Bair, and Megan North each scored a goal. Jaden Keister earned the win in goal and made three saves. The Falcons outshot the Mustangs 23 to five. The Falcons had 12 shots on goal to the Mustangs four. The Falcons earned 15 penalty corners and the Mustangs earned six.
