No. 5 Field Hockey Blazes Past Hood

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Messiah University field hockey team put forth another dominant offensive effort in their 9-0 win at Hood College, on Wednesday evening. The Falcons opened the scoring with a Teagan Murrie goal from Nicole Shank in the fifth minute and never looked back. Carrie Bair and Leah Bryner each added goals in the first half to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead at the half. Aubrey Clark tallied two of the Falcons six second-half goals to give Messiah a 9-0 win.
 
Up next, the Falcons return home to take on the ninth-ranked Spartans of York (Pa.) on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 1:00 p.m.
 
First Quarter
The Falcons offense started rolling in the fifth minute with a penalty corner opportunity. Nicole Shank sent the corner into play to Teagan Murrie. Murrie stopped the ball and wound up and rocketed a shot past the Blazers goalkeeper and into the back of the goal to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The Falcons totaled 16 shots in the first quarter and allowed zero shots.
 
Second Quarter
The Falcons opened the second quarter again on the attack. After forcing a Blazers turnover, the Falcons pushed the ball forward with some quick passing. The ball found Megan North's stick on the left side of the circle and after the Hood goalkeeper came out of the goal, North sent a pass right in front of the net. Carrie Bair was there to tap the ball into the goal and give the Falcons a 2-0 lead. The Falcons offense was not finished and continued the attack in the 24th minute with a penalty corner opportunity. Leah Bryner sent the ball into play to Teagan Murrie. Murrie sent the pass back to Bryner and Bryner sent a one-timer towards the goal. The Hood goalkeeper made an impressive sliding save, but Bryner gathered the rebound and sent her next shot in the back of the goal to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead at the half.
 
Third Quarter
The Falcons offense opened the second half looking to extend their lead just 16 seconds into the half. The Falcons sent the ball forward on the opening play. The ball was gathered by a Hood defender, but Aubrey Clark stole the ball and drove towards the net. Clark then sent a shot past the Hood goalkeeper to give the Falcons a 4-0 lead. The Falcons continued to push the tempo on offense in the 35th minute. After forcing a turnover out of bounds near the 25-yard line, Kelsey Heltzel sent a long pass back into play that trickled all the way into the circle to Madi Johnson. Johnson's first shot was denied, but she gathered the rebound and sent the rebound into the back of the goal to push the Falcons lead to five. The Falcons did not wait long to add to their lead. Just two minutes later, Lindsay McFeaters sent a shot into the back of the goal to extend the Falcons lead up to six. The Falcons added two more goals from Aubrey Clark and Leah Bryner, both assisted by Audrey Weger to give the Falcons a 8-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
 
Fourth Quarter
In the 48th minute the Falcons offense continued to pour it on. Carrie Bair scored her second goal of the night from Lindsay McFeaters to give the Falcons a 9-0 lead. The Falcons defense was dominant all night, allowing zero shots and penalty corners in the game.
 
Stats
Aubrey Clark, Leah Bryner, and Carrie Bair each led the Falcons offense with two goals. Madi Johnson, Lindsay McFeaters, and Teagan Murrie each added a goal. Audrey Weger added in two assists. The Falcons outshot the Blazers 39-0. Messiah earned 19 penalty corners and gave up zero. Catie Brubaker earned the start in goal for the Falcons and Jaden Keister took over for the second half. The shutout win was the seventh of the season for the Falcons.
