GRANTHAM, Pa - The Messiah women's volleyball team hosted a non conference matchup against Shenandoah University. The Falcons were able to get the best of the Hornets, to pull off the 3-0 sweep.
The Falcons will be back in action Wednesday Oct. 11 to square off with conference opponent Eastern. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
How It Happened:
The first set was as competitive as it could be. The Hornets were able to grab a hold of a 6-3 lead however, Messiah was able to score seven out of the next nine to take a 10-9 lead heading into the midway point. Mackenzie Feight was able to score her 1,000 kill of her career during the run. From then on both teams were in a tight race, exchanging points back and forth. Feight, Sarah Hart, Katie Quesenberry, and Chayney Barnhart all got involved early for the Falcons. An attack error from Hart allowed the Hornets to go on a three point run to take a 20-17 late in the match. However, the Falcons did not go away, scoring five straight points to tie the game at 21. Shenandoah battled hard, but it would be the Falcons taking the set 25-23. Hart and Feight would score pivotal points late to take set one from the Hornets.
Heading into set two the Hornets would come out strong, jumping to an early 5-1 lead. A smart timeout from Messiah head coach Holly Motheral allowed the Falcons to regain their composure and score five out of the next six to tie the game at seven. Messiah would not look back, as they rattled off 10 out of the next 11 points. Barnhart, Feight, and Hart continued to dominate at the next, extending the lead to 16-9. For the remainder of the match the Falcons were able to hold the Hornets to just five more points, taking the second set 25-13.
Up 2-0 going into the third set, Messiah would pick up where they left off, opening up a quick 8-3 lead. However, the Hornets would not back down going on a run of their own, bringing the score to 10-6. The Falcons defense proved to be the difference in the third set, holding the Hornets to 16 points total. Messiah extended their lead to as big as 10, with the score sitting at 21-11, Shenandoah was determined to battle back, however it would be the Falcons prevailing winning the set 25-16 to complete the 3-0 sweep.
