NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The No. 14 Messiah women's lacrosse team continued their winning ways with an 11-8 victory over the Christopher Newport Captains on Saturday afternoon. The Captains struck first with two goals in the first 90 seconds of the contest, but Messiah quickly responded with four goals before the end of the period to take a 4-2 lead after 15 minutes of play.
Across the final 45 minutes, Messiah outscored Christopher Newport 7-6 to earn the three-goal victory, their fifth of the season.
Rachel Delate was dominate on Saturday afternoon, setting a new career-high in goals scored in a game with seven while also adding an assist for eight total points.
Overall, Messiah moves to 5-1 on the year and will be back in action on Wednesday when they host to Shenandoah at 5:00 p.m. on the Lacrosse Turf.
How It Happened
As mentioned, the Falcons fell into an early 2-0 hole with the Captains' Syd Guidi scoring a pair of goals in the first 90 seconds of play. The Falcons quickly responded with a goal from
Emma Lytle assisted by
Rachel Delate and three-straight tallies from Delate to end the quarter with a 4-2 lead.
A slow second quarter saw just two total goals scored with
Hannah Gawne finding the back of the cage for the Falcons. The result was a 5-3 Messiah lead at the break.
In the second half, Christopher Newport closed the gap to one with an early goal, but once again, Messiah answered with a scoring run. This time, the Falcons tallied three-straight goals all from
Rachel Delate to take an 8-4 lead.
After a Christopher Newport goal,
Hayley Lettinga connected to give Messiah a 9-5 lead heading to the fourth quarter.
Despite the Captains outscoring the Falcons 3-2 in the fourth quarter, Messiah was able to claim the 11-8 victory.

The Falcons will be back in action on Wednesday evening when they host the Shenandoah Hornets at 5:00 p.m. in a non-conference game. The Falcons are closing in on the start of the MAC Commonwealth slate with their first conference date scheduled for Mar. 29 against Alvernia.
