Widener's Curran Twirls Near Perfecto, Shuts Out Falcons

GRANTHAM, Pa. - Widener's Sean Curran retired the first 26 Messiah batters he faced on Thursday afternoon. Curran got ahead of Messiah's Jarrett Gordon 1-2, but the Falcons shortstop hit a sharply struck bouncing ball to the left side of the infield. A dive from the third baseman could not corral the ball and Messiah saw their first baserunner of the game reach on an infield single with two outs in the ninth inning. Curran would issue a walk to Dustin Isanogle, but record the final out of the game on a strikeout, settling for a 6-0 shutout victory over a history making perfect game.

Curran was the one and only story of the game as Messiah was unable to find any offense in the contest. Curran finished the game with a line of nine innings pitched and eight strikeouts against just one hit and one walk.

The Pride got on the board in the top of the first inning and added three runs in the fourth to build a 4-0 lead. Insurance runs in the seventh and eighth followed as they went on for the 6-0 victory. The win moves Widener to 8-11 overall while the Falcons drop to 7-10-1. Both teams are 3-4 in the MAC Commonwealth.

The Falcons and Pride are scheduled to complete their three-game series on Saturday afternoon in Chester, though rain is scheduled throughout the weekend.
