Dutchmen Overpower Falcons on Tuesday Afternoon

ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Messiah baseball team fell 11-1 against the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen on Tuesday afternoon to begin a three-game series, split across the next two weeks. The Falcon struggled to find the big hit in Tuesday's contest, leaving seven runners on base in the contest. The Dutchmen drew 12 walks in the game, creating plenty of traffic on the base paths.

Luke Ott drove home the lone Messiah run with a single to center field in the third inning.

The Dutchmen spread five runs across the first four innings before adding six insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh, four of which came off a Shane Stossel grand slam. Messiah will host the Eastern Eagles on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. to begin another conference series. The Falcons and Dutchmen will wrap up their three-game set on Apr. 4 in Grantham with a Tuesday doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.

How It Happened
The Dutchmen scored in each of the first four innings, building a 5-1 lead after the bottom of the fourth. During those opening frames, Messiah threatened on multiple occasions, putting runners on in the second, third, and fourth. Despite some traffic on the base paths, the Falcons were only able to score one run. That run came in the top of the third on a Luke Ott single to center, bringing home David Martinez, who reached with a single earlier in the frame.

In the fourth, Messiah loaded the bases with one away, but were unable to push across a run with a strike out and a diving play in center field ending the inning on a line drive.

The seventh inning brought six Dutchmen runs with a grand slam from Shane Stossel highlighting the inning for Lebanon Valley. After the breakout frame, Lebanon Valley held an 11-1 lead, the eventual final score.

What's Up Next
The loss moves Messiah to 5-5 in the conference and 9-11-1 overall. The Falcons will be back in action on Friday afternoon with they host the Eastern Eagles at 3:30 p.m. to begin a three-game conference series. The Falcons and Eagles will then play a doubleheader on Saturday in St. Davids, Pa. beginning at noon.
