No. 4 Field Hockey Falls in Overtime at No. 3 Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. – The No. 4 Messiah University field hockey team's undefeated start to the season ended at No. 3 Johns Hopkins, 2-1, in overtime on Wednesday afternoon. After a scoreless first quarter, the Falcons got on the board with a Carrie Bair goal just a minute into the second quarter. Four minutes later, the Blue Jays answered the Falcons goal with a goal of their own to tie the game at one. Both defenses and goalies played strong throughout the final 40 minutes to push the game into overtime. Just two minutes into overtime, Johns Hopkins found the back of the goal to give the Blue Jays a 2-1 win. Catie Brubaker finished with four saves in net for the Falcons.
 
Up next the Falcons travel to Geneva, N.Y. to face the Herons of William Smith College on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 12:00 p.m.

First Quarter
The first quarter was dictated by dominate defenses from both teams. Both teams did not allow a single shot in the first quarter, but that trend was going to quickly change.
 
Second Quarter
In the first minute of the second quarter, the Falcons went on the attack. After a Blue Jays foul just past midfield, Teagan Murrie passed it over to Mallory Kline. Kline carried the ball through defenders and into the circle. Kline found room and ripped a shot towards the net, but the shot was blocked by a Blue Jays defender. After the block the ball trickled over to Carrie Bair and Bair poked the ball into the back of the goal to give the Falcons a one-goal lead. The Falcons continued the attack with another great chance just two minutes later. Anna Koenig drilled a pass to the top of the circle to Jenna Lutz. Lutz tried a shot, but it was blocked by a Blue Jays defender, but the ball trickled over to Mallory Kline. Kline sent a blistering shot towards the bottom-left corner of the goal, but the Blue Jays goalie made an impressive kick save to keep the score 1-0. In the 19th minute the Blue Jays offense looked to get their first chance to get on the board. After a few passes, Siena Urbanski looked to have a great chance right in front of the net, but Catie Brubaker made an impressive sliding save to keep the Blue Jays off the board, but the Blue Jays earned a penalty corner. After the first penalty corner was shut down by another Brubaker save, the Blue Jays earned another opportunity at the corner. The corner was sent into Liz Falterer and Falterer sent the ball over to Jenna Halpin. Halpin played the ball back to Falterer and she ripped a shot past the sliding Brubaker to tie the game at one. In the 29th minute, the Falcons earned a great scoring chance with a penalty corner. Jenna Lutz sent the ball into Nicole Shank and Shank ripped a one-timer through traffic, but the Blue Jays goalkeeper made a kick save to keep the score tied at the half.
 
Third Quarter
The first 11 minutes of the third quarter started as a defensive battle, but the Falcons got a great chance in the 42nd minute. Just outside of the left side of the circle, Megan North drippled the ball through two defenders and sent a pass to Carrie Bair. Bair, looking for her second goal of the afternoon, carried the ball into the left side of the circle and sent a shot towards the goal, but the Blue Jays goalkeeper made another kick save to preserve the tie. Just two minutes later the Blue Jays looked for a chance to break the tie. After a penalty corner, the Blue Jays sent the ball into play and after a pass the ball found Liz Falterer's stick. Falterer ripped a shot from the top of the circle, but Catie Brubaker made a kick save to keep the score tied heading in the final quarter.
 
Fourth Quarter
Like the first quarter, the defenses for both teams were putting on a show. With four minutes remaining in the game, though the Blue Jays looked for a break to end the game in regulation. On a penalty corner, the ball was played to Jenna Halpin at the top of the circle. Halpin ripped a shot towards the goal, but Catie Brubaker made a lunging kick save to keep the score tied. The great defensive effort continued for both sides and the score remained tied, as the game headed to overtime.
 
Overtime
After a failed penalty corner attempt by the Falcons, the Blue Jays moved the ball on the counterattack. The Blue Jays were stopped for a moment, but regrouped after a Messiah foul. Mikayla Schoff started the play with a pass over to Liz Falterer. Falterer gathered the pass just outside the circle and carried the ball into the circle. She wound up and ripped a long shot from just inside the circle that snuck into the ball of the goal for the game winner.
