GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Messiah women's volleyball team fell to SUNY Brockport to open the Messiah Invitational. The Falcons dropped three straight sets to lose 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-18)
Mackenzie Feight led the Falcons with nine kills, while
Cassidy Dell was not far behind with eight.
The Falcons will be back in action Saturday, Sept 23 against Gettysburg, and Rowan. First match is set to start at 11:00 a.m.
How It Happened
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a fast start, quickly taking ahold of a 4-0 lead. A couple errors from Brockport, and a kill from
Sarah Hart led to the falcons making it a 5-3 set. The Golden Eagles would not let up continuing to string points together, through the mid-way point Brockport found themselves up 13-10. But the Falcons would rally in a big way, going on to score 12 out of the next 13 points. Hart,
Chayney Barnhart,
Emma Swartz, and multiple Golden Eagle errors led to the Falcons to grab a 21-14 lead. Brockport would fight their way back into the set, but it would be little too late, a Feight kill, and a Brockport error led to the Falcons taking the 25-19 win.
Messiah would head into set two leading 1-0 in the match, but the Golden Eagles would not go away. Both teams would come out aggressive trading points back and forth. The Falcons would hold an 8-6 lead until, the Golden Eagles would go on to score six straight points to take a hold of an 12-8 lead. Following a couple point exchanges, the Falcons would manage to cut the lead down to one, making it a 16-15 set. From that point on it would be all Brockport, as the Golden Eagles would score nine out of the last 15 points to win the set 25-21.
Heading into set three knotted at 1-1, both teams would again come out strong. Dell, Barnhart and Feight, would keep the Falcons in the set down 14-10. Lielbriedis, and Barnhart would also score points for the Falcons, as Messiah would again cut the Brockport lead to 18-14. However, it would be all Golden Eagles from that moment on, scoring seven out of the last eight points to take the set 25-15.
With the Falcons down two sets to one, they would come out hoping to extend the match into a fourth set. However, the Golden Eagles had other plans. Brockport would come out swinging, managing to score points at will. Heading into the midway point the Golden Eagles found themselves up 15-9. Messiah tried to claw their way back into the set, led by Feight, Dell, and Leilbriedis. Unfortunately, it would not be enough, the Golden Eagles would finish the set strong, stringing together points in bunches to take the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.
