Field Hockey Tops Alvernia 4-0

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The No. 20 Messiah University field hockey team took on the Golden Wolves of Alvernia University in a conference matchup on Wednesday evening. The Falcons took down the Golden Wolves with a final score of 4-0. Teagan Murrie and Aubrey Clark both scored in the second quarter. In the fourth quarter of play, Audrey Weger and Olivia Zaskoda each added a goal of their own.

Messiah is next in action on Saturday, October 19th, when they travel to York College of Pennsylvania to take on the Spartans at 1:00 p.m.

First Quarter
Messiah looked to strike early when both Leah Bryner fired a shot just over a minute into play. Her shot was blocked by a defender and Hailey Womer quickly fired a shot of her own that was also blocked. Play continued in the midfield for the next four minutes with the Falcons looking to push forward without much success. Carrie Bair fired a shot on goal that was again blocked by an Alvernia defender. Three minutes later, Bryner put a shot on frame, but the Alvernia goalie was able to make the save. With just under five minutes to play, Mallory Kline fired a shot of her own, but the Alvernia goalie came up with another save, keeping the score 0-0 at the end of the quarter.

Second Quarter
The Falcons once again came out looking to put a goal on the board. Lindsey Campione was the first Falcon to fire a shot, but the Alvernia goalie made the save. The Falcons were then awarded a penalty stroke and Leah Bryner stepped up to the penalty spot. Bryner fired a ball low and towards the post, but the Alvernia goalie made a diving save to keep the game scoreless. With just over eight minutes to play, the Falcons earned their first penalty corner of the game. Jenna Lutz found Teagan Murrie on the insert and Murrie slotted her fourth goal of the season and Messiah's first of the game. Two minutes later, it was a familiar scene as Lutz stepped out to take a penalty corner for Messiah. This time she found Casey Tyrrell at the top of the circle, who was able to find Aubrey Clark in front of the goal to bring the Falcons' lead to 2-0. The Falcons picked up one more penalty corner but were unable to convert it to a shot.

Third Quarter
The Falcons continued their offensive pressure coming out of halftime but were not able to put up any scoring attack. Messiah picked up three penalty corners and fired off four shots during the first ten minutes of the half. With 40 seconds remaining in the third quarter, the Falcons earned their fourth penalty corner of the third quarter. Mallory Kline fired a shot that looked to be the Falcons' best opportunity of the quarter, but the Alvernia goalie was able to make the save.

Fourth Quarter
Messiah looked to increase their two goal differential in the final quarter of play. Just a minute and a half into the final quarter, Carrie Bair sent a ball forward to Audrey Weger who put it past the goalie for her first goal of the season, and the Falcons' third of the game. Three minutes later, Messiah earned a penalty corner but committed a foul in the following play to cause a turnover. Alvernia looked to build momentum of their own following the restart, pressing down the field and picking up a penalty corner of their own. They were unable to convert a shot, and the score remained 3-0 in favor of the Falcons. With three and a half minutes to play, the Falcons earned their final penalty corner of the game. Ellie Lefever fired off a shot that was saved by the Alvernia goalie. Caitlyn Weatherill was able to get a stick on the deflection and make a short pass to Olivia Zaskoda on the goal line. Zaskoda was able to tap the ball in for her first goal of the season, and Messiah's fourth of the game. Alvernia picked up three penalty corners in the final 35 seconds of the game, including one with less than a second remaining on the clock. A shot from the first penalty corner was blocked by a Messiah defender. The last second corner resulted in a shot on goal from for the Golden Wolves, but Eva Hancock was able to make the save and secure the 4-0 victory for the Falcons.

Stats
Teagan Murrie, Aubrey Clark, Audrey Weger, and Olivia Zaskoda each scored a goal for the Falcons. Jenna Lutz, Casey Tyrrell, Carrie Bair, and Caitlyn Weatherill each picked up an assist. Messiah outshot Alvernia 17 to two, placing 10 on goal to Alvernia's one. The Falcons earned nine penalty corners while the Golden Wolves earned four.
