WINCHESTER, Va. – The eighth-ranked Messiah University women's soccer team used a four-goal first half to defeat the Hornets of Shenandoah University, 4-1. The Falcons offense got out of the gates firing with an early goal from
Mia Libby by
Addi Martin in the 14th minute to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Just 10 minutes later,
Kristina Akselsen sent a shot over the goalkeeper and into the back of the goal to extend the Falcons lead to two.
Hannah Adair would finish the first half scoring with two straight goals to give the Falcons a 4-0 lead at the break. Shenandoah added a late goal to make the final score 4-1.
Up next, the Falcons return to Shoemaker Field for the MAC Commonwealth opener and homecoming weekend against the Eagles of Eastern University on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 3:00 p.m.
First Half
The Falcons offense got off to a hot start with three shots saved by the Hornets goalkeeper in the first 13 minutes. The Falcons though looked to get one past the Hornet goalkeeper in the 14th minute. After
Kristina Akselsen caused a turnover in the midfield, the Falcons passed the ball around until it found
Addi Martin just inside the box. Martin made a move past the defender and looked to shoot, but instead sent a pass across the box, where
Mia Libby sent a one-timer into the bottom-left corner to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The Falcons offense continued to put the pressure on the Hornets defense in the 24th minute. After an
Addi Martin pass,
Kristina Akselsen ripped a shot from about 20 yards out that went bar down and into the back of the goal to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead. The Falcons offense continued to put the pressure on with a corner kick in the 35th minute.
Alayna Williams took the corner and sent the ball into the box. After the ball bounced off a player,
Hannah Adair volleyed the ball off the bounce, and into the back of the goal to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead.
Hannah Adair added another goal in the 39th minute to give the Falcons a 4-0 halftime lead.
Second Half
The Hornets come out of the halftime break buzzing. The Hornets got the first three shots on the half, with the first shot towards the bottom-right of the goal, that
Ava Wert made the save on. The Falcons had a chance to extend their lead in the 74th minute, with a
Hannah Adair shot, but the shot was saved by the Hornets goalkeeper. The Hornets though got on the board in the 80th minute with a shot into the top-right corner to reduce the Falcons lead to three. Just two minutes later,
Aundrea Frederick looked to put the Falcons up by four again, but her shot was saved by the Hornets goalkeeper and the Falcons held the score at 4-1 until the final whistle.

Kristina Akselsen and
Mia Libby each totaled a goal.
Addi Martin totaled two assists.
Alayna Williams also added an assist. The Falcons totaled 18 shots with 12 shots on goal. The Hornets tallied eight shots with three shots on goal. The Falcons earned four corner kicks to the Hornets one.
Ava Wert earned the win in goal for the Falcons and made two saves.
