GRANTHAM, Pa.- The No. 16 Messiah Field Hockey team took on the Widener University Pride on Wednesday evening on Anderson Field in a conference match-up. The Falcons scored a goal in each quarter en route to a 4-1 victory over the Widener Pride.
Aubrey Clark and
Mallory Kline scored in the first and second quarter respectively while
Leah Bryner and
Chelsea Carpenter added goals in the third and fourth respectively.
Falcons are next in action on Saturday, October 26th, when they travel to Stevenson, Md. to take on Stevenson University at 1:00 pm.
First Quarter
Messiah picked up their first penalty corner at the 6:10 mark of the first quarter.
Teagan Murrie looked to put the Falcons on the board first with a shot, but her attempt was blocked. At the 9:36 mark,
Ellie Lefever found
Aubrey Clark at the front of the goal. Clark was able to net the ball for the Falcons' first goal. A minute later, it was again
Teagan Murrie looking for a goal, but the Widener goalie was able to make the save. With just over a minute remaining, Widener took back-to-back shots looking for the equalizer, but
Eva Hancock was able to make two saves to keep the score 1-0 in favor of the Messiah.
Second Quarter
The Falcons came out looking to extend their lead and took their first shot under a minute into the quarter.
Lexi Hanlin struck a ball hard on goal, but the Widener goalie was able to make the save once again. Messiah picked up three corners in the nineteenth minute of play which resulted in two shots being blocked by Widener defenders. With just under four minutes to play in the first half,
Mallory Kline slotted a ball past the goalie to bring Messiah's advantage to 2 goals to none. Widener fired a shot off a penalty corner of their own but missed wide.
Casey Tyrrell fired one final first half shot for the Falcons but missed just wide.
Third Quarter
Coming out of the half, both teams kept on the pressure in hopes of adding a goal. Messiah was the first to earn an opportunity when they were awarded a penalty corner two and a half minutes into the quarter.
Aubrey Clark was able to fire off a shot, but it was saved by the Widener goalie. After some back and forth play in the midfield, Messiah earned another penalty corner at the 37:02 mark.
Casey Tyrrell fired off a shot that was saved by the Pride goalie, but
Leah Bryner was able to strike the deflection back on goal and slid it past the goalie, bringing the Messiah lead to 3-0. Late in the quarter, Widener earned a penalty corner and looked to fire a shot, but
Eva Hancock was able to make the save and keep the score 3-0 in favor of the Falcons with one quarter of play remaining.
Fourth Quarter
Messiah earned a penalty corner two and a half minutes into the final quarter.
Aubrey Clark looked to score her second goal of the night but missed high as her shot was tipped off another stick. With nine minutes remaining, the Falcons looked to take advantage of the opportunity again, but
Mallory Kline's shot was blocked. The Falcons saw a near identical play about a minute later when their next corner resulted in a blocked shot. With 5:33 remaining in the game,
Chelsea Carpenter spun around the Pride goalie to increase the Messiah lead to 4-0. Back-to-back fouls for the Falcons lead to a Widener penalty corner with 2:35 remaining. The Pride were able to fire a shot for their first goal of the night and bringing the game to the final score of 4-1 in favor of the Falcons.
