CHESTER, Pa. – On Saturday evening, the Messiah University men's soccer team used a five-goal outburst to defeat the Mustangs on Stevenson University, 5-0. The Falcons finally broke through on the scoreboard in the 28th minute with a goal from
Sam Phillips from
Caleb Aldridge to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. In the 38th minute the Falcons added another with a
Matt Schumacher goal from Phillips to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead at the half. The Falcons added another goal early in the second half with
Kyle Spodnik scoring from
Patrick Lee to push the Falcons lead to three.
Harrison Keator and
Gianni Pezzino each added a goal to give the Falcons the 5-0 win.
Up next, the Falcons travel to Chester, Pa. to take on the Pride of Widener University on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 7:00 p.m.
First Half
Both teams earned chances in the first 24 minutes with both teams getting a shot on goal.
Patrick Lee got the shot on goal, but it was saved by the Mustangs goalkeeper and
Adam Carter made the save on a shot from the Mustangs. The Falcons looked to get on the board in the 28th minute with a corner kick.
Caleb Aldridge took the corner and sent a cross towards the front post.
Sam Phillips stepped in front of his defender and headed the ball into the bottom-right corner to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The Falcons continued on the attack and looked to add to their lead in the 38th minute. The Falcons moved the ball around the box and eventually
Sam Phillips found an opening and passed the ball over to
Matt Schumacher. Schumacher then took a couple of dribbles and drilled the ball into the top-left corner to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead headed into the half.
Second Half
The Falcons looked to continue putting pressure on the Mustang defense in the second half. In the 57th minute,
Patrick Lee sent a through ball into the box to
Kyle Spodnik. Spodnik touched the ball past a sliding Mustang goalkeeper and tapped the ball into the goal to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead. The Falcons attack though was not content with three goals. In the 64th minute,
Harrison Keator ripped a shot from around the edge of the box. The ball squeaked through the Mustangs' goalkeepers' hands and past the goal line to push the Falcons lead to 4-0. In the final minute of the game,
Gianni Pezzino scored the final tally of the night from
Matt Schumacher to put the stamp on the Falcons 5-0 win.

Killian O'Reilly also earned time in goal and made two saves.
