Falcons Roll Through Golden Wolves, Will Host MAC Commonwealth Championship

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The top seed Messiah Field Hockey team hosted the No. 4 seed Alvernia Golden Wolves for a MAC Commonwealth Semifinal matchup on Anderson Field. The Falcons earned the dominant 7-1 victory after leading 5-0 at the half. Hailey Womer led the Falcons with three goals, Leah Bryner, Jenna Lutz, Ellie Lefever, and Anna Koenig all scored one each.
With the victory, the Falcons will host the MAC Commonwealth Championship game on Saturday, November 9, at 1:00 p.m. versus the York College Spartans on Anderson Field.

First Quarter
Messiah came out looking to score early and quickly took control of possession of the game. Just 1:46 into the first quarter, Mallory Kline passed a ball to Hailey Womer who struck it past the goalie to give the Falcons the early 1-0 lead. Two and a half minutes later, Carrie Bair drove towards goal and slotted a ball to Leah Bryner who found the back of the cage to bring the lead to 2-0. Messiah picked up their first penalty corner at the 9:01 mark. Teagan Murrie found Jenna Lutz for the Falcons third goal of the game. Chelsea Carpenter fired a shot on goal, but the Golden Wolves' goalie was able to make the save.

Second Quarter
After the break, the Falcons looked to continue their scoring efforts. They picked up their second penalty corner of the game just over three minutes into the quarter. Teagan Murrie fired a shot, but the Alvernia goalie was able to make the save. Ellie Lefever fired back the deflection but missed just wide. Messiah quickly picked up another corner, but Caitlyn Weatherill's shot was just wide of the goal. With eight minutes remaining, Alvernia fired off their first shot of the game, but Joy Lippert came up with the save in goal for Messiah. The Golden Wolves took back-to-back penalty corners, but the Falcons defense was able to clear the ball without allowing another shot. Two minutes later, the Mallory Kline fired a shot off a corner that was saved by the Golden Wolves' goalie, who was also able to stop the rebounded shot that Teagan Murrie fired back on cage.

In the next minute, Messiah took three penalty corners with Caitlyn Weatherill registering two shots. Hailey Womer entered the game with four minutes remaining in the half and made an immediate impact as she intercepted a pass and drove towards goal, slotting a ball past the goalie for her second of the game, bringing the lead to 4-0 in favor of the Falcons. With back-to-back penalty corners of their own, the Falcons forced the Golden Wolves' goalie to make saves on shots by Mallory Kline and Carrie Bair. A short time later, it was again Womer driving towards the goal and firing it past the goalie to bring the lead to 5-0 heading into halftime.

Third Quarter
Coming out of halftime, Alvernia was ready to apply pressure on the Falcons and work to get themselves on the board. The Golden Wolves drove to the goal and earned a penalty corner just 20 seconds into play. Alvernia was able to connect on the play and scored their first goal of the game, bringing the score to 5-1 in favor of the Falcons. The goal did not deter the Falcons. Messiah picked up four penalty corners in a minute and half, with the final one resulting in a goal by Ellie Lefever from Mallory Kline. In the next ten minutes, Messiah earned two penalty corners and fired off four shots. The second corner resulted in Anna Koenig's first goal of the season after a pass from Lindsey Campione. Messiah took the 7-1 lead into the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter
Audrey Weger was the first Falcon to register a shot in the fourth quarter, forcing an Alvernia save to keep the Messiah lead from growing any further. It was another five and a half minutes before Aubrey Clark fired a shot on goal that was again saved by the Alvernia goalie. In the final eight minutes of play, Messiah earned six penalty corners, registered eight shots, and placing seven of them on goal, forcing saves by the Alvernia goalie. Messiah was able to convert on any opportunities in the fourth quarter and ended the game 7-1 over the Golden Wolves.

Stats
Hailey Womer led the Falcons with three goals. Leah Bryner, Jenna Lutz, Ellie Lefever, and Anna Koenig each added one. Mallory Kline had two assists for the Falcons and Teagan Murrie and Lindsey Campione each added one. The Falcons outshot the Golden Wolves 34 to two, placing 25 on goal to Alvernia's two. Messiah earned 22 penalty corners compared to Alvernia's three. Joy Lippert earned the win in goal for Messiah, making one save. Lexi Boettcher had 16 saves in goal for Alvernia and Zoe Caloviras had two.
