Men's Team Finishes Spring Break on a High Note

HILTON HEAD, SC. - The Messiah mens tennis team begins their spring break road trip Tuesday evening against Greenville University at 3:00p.m. The Falcons will be on the road for four total matches throughout the week. Following Tuesdays match, the team will take on Asbury University (Ky.) Wednesday, Mar. 13 at 6:00p.m. The team will then turn around Thursday at 6:30p.m against Shepard University. Messiah will wrap up their spring break against Oswego State Friday March 15th at 1:30p.m.

Friday – Messiah University defeats Oswego State – 6-3

Doubles:
The Falcons started out the day taking two of the three doubles courts to grab an early 2-1 match advantage. Chase Wilson / Tim Sheaffer took down their opponents 8-3. Michael Niemi / Carl Anderson pushed their opponents into a tiebreaker knotted at 7-7. However, they would fall 7-5 in the tie breaker to lose the court. Luke Risser / Eli Noll would respond with a dominant 8-1 on court three.
 
Singles:
Chase Wilson made quick work of his opponent on court one. The Falcon picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win for Messiah. Michael Niemi would fall on court two losing 6-4, 6-1. Tim Sheaffer responded with a win of his own on court three with a 7-5, 6-3 victory, giving the Falcons a 4-2 match advantage. Carl Anderson forced a third set on court four but came up short losing 4-6, 6-0, 10-7. Luke Risser picked up a three set victory (3-6, 6-1, 10-6) and Eli Noll would finish the job on court six winning 6-4, 6-2 to give the Falcons their first victory of the season.
 

Thursday – Shepard University defeats Messiah – 5-4

Doubles:
The Falcons opened up doubles play with a court one loss. Chase Wilson / Tim Sheaffer would lose by a score of 8-1. However, Messiah would rally to win courts two and three to close out doubles play up 2-1 in the matches. Michael Niemi / Carl Anderson would take court two 8-5. While on court three, Luke Risser / Eli Noll would beat their opponents 8-6.
 
Singles:
The Rams immediately tied up the match when they took court one by defeating Chase Wilson by scores of 6-1,6-1. Eli Noll would however regain the Falcon match lead after a 6-2, 6-2 win over his opponent on court six. The matches seemed to go back and forth after a 6-1,6-1 defeat on court two following a Michael Niemi loss. Unfortunately, the Falcons would trail for the first time on the day after a court four loss from Carl Anderson by scores of 6-2,6-2. Tim Sheaffer would again tie things up for the Falcons with a 6-3, 6-4 win on court three. The Final court to finish would be court five with Luke Risser pushing his opponent to the brink. However, Risser would fall just short in both sets losing 6-4, 6-3 giving the Rams a 5-4 overall match victory.
 

Wednesday – Asbury University defeats Messiah – 7-1

Doubles:
The Messiah mens tennis team couldn't get it going against the Eagles of Asbury University losing all three doubles courts. Chase Wilson / Tim Sheaffer would fall to their opponents on court one by a score of 8-4. On court two Michael Niemi / Carl Anderson came up short by a score of 8-2. Lastly on court three the Eagles closed it out with a 8-1 victory over Payton Sopriak / Zhenga Martin.
 
Singles:
Heading into singles down 3-0 in the matches, the Falcons knew they needed to get it done during singles action. Chase Wilson would have the lone win for the Falcons on court one and the game of the day. Wilson would take down his opponent by scores of 0-6, 6-3, 10-6 to get the Falcons on the board.
 
However, courts two through six were all loses for the Falcons. Michael Niemi suffered a 6-1,6-1 loss. Tim Sheaffer was unable to get a win on court three falling to his opponent 6-1, 6-3. On court four Carl Anderson would lose 6-0, 6-2. Eli Noll would fight hard on court six but came up short falling by scores of 6-4, 6-1.
 
Luke Risser was unable to finish his match due to the lights going off. The Asbury Eagles took the day overall 7-1, leaving the Falcons still winless on the season.
 

Tuesday – Greenville University defeats Messiah – 9-0

Doubles:
The mens team was not able to pick up a win on doubles court, as the Panthers won all three courts giving them an early 3-0 match advantage. On court one Chase Wilson / Tim Sheaffer lost by a score of 8-1. Michael Niemi / Carl Anderson would fall in a close contested match on court two 8-4. Lastly on court three, Luke Risser / Eli Noll fell to their opponents 8-2.
 
Singles:
The Falcons were unable to bounce back during singles action as the team would ultimately fall in five sets as the Panthers secured the first three courts. Chase Wilson would drop court one by identical scores of 6-2, 6-2. Michael Niemi came up short on court two losing to his opponent 6-1, 6-3. Tim Sheaffer and Carl Anderson had hard tough sets on their respective courts, but both would lose in two sets. Luke Risser played strong on court five but ultimately came up short losing 6-3, 6-3. Lastly Eli Noll would be the only Falcon to force a third set losing the first set 6-3, but winning set two 6-0. However, in the third set he would fall 10-6 having the closest match of the day.
