Softball Walks Off Hood Twice

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Messiah University softball team walked off the Hood College Blazers twice in different fashions to sweep the Blazers on Saturday afternoon. In game one, the Blazers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI single. The Falcons then tied the game up with an RBI single from Kandice Schlabach in the bottom of the fifth. Both pitchers were dealing, but the Falcons got an RBI single from Alexa Burger in the bottom of the seventh to earn the 2-1 thrilling walk off win. Lydia Collison pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run on four hits and five strikeouts. Hannah Dyer led the Falcons offense with three hits and a run. Alexa Burger and Kandice Schlabach each record a hit and an RBI.
 
In game two, both teams scored a run in the first inning. The Falcons started to pull away in the bottom of the third and fourth, scoring two runs in each of the innings. The Falcons then scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to walk off the game due to the run rule with a 9-1 win and a sweep over the Blazers. Fallon Feaser pitched all five innings for the Falcons, allowing one earned run on four hits and four strikeouts. Hannah Dyer, Alexa Burger, Kandice Schlabach, and Paige Eakes each record two hits. Schlabach led the Falcons with four RBIs and Ali Wagner and Dyer led the Falcons with two runs each.
 
Up next, the Falcons host the Dickinson College Red Devils for a make-up game from Feb. 20, on Thursday, April 11 at 4:00 p.m.

Game One – Messiah 2, Hood 1
After two innings of scoreless play, Hood looked to get on the board in the top of the third. The Blazers would take a 1-0 lead after an RBI single. The Falcons in the bottom of the third looked to answer. Hannah Dyer hit a two out single and then stole second to give the Falcons their first runner in scoring position. Alexa Burger then walked, but the Falcons flew out to end the inning and Hood still held the one run lead.
 
After more great pitching the Falcons looked to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth. Paige Eakes led the inning off with a walk and then Hannah Dyer hit a bunt single to put runners on first and second with no outs. After a strikeout, Kandice Schlabach hit an RBI single to tie the game at one. The Falcons though could not get another run across, and the game stayed tied heading into the sixth inning.
 
Both teams went down in order in the sixth and then Lydia Collison threw another scoreless inning in the top of the seventh to set up a potential walk off opportunity for the Falcons. Hannah Dyer hit a bunt single with one out to give the Falcons the winning run on base. Alexa Burger then singled into right field and as she was being thrown out at second, Dyer used her speed and awareness and scored all the way from first to give the Falcons a 2-1 win.
 
Lydia Collison pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run on four hits and five strikeouts. Hannah Dyer led the Falcons offense with three hits and a run. Alexa Burger and Kandice Schlabach each record a hit and an RBI.
 
Game Two – Messiah 9, Hood 1 – 5 Innings
The Blazers started the game strong with a run in the first inning and once again take the first lead of the game. This game though the Falcons responded quickly. Hannah Dyer led off the bottom half with a walk and then advanced to second on a ground out. Kandice Schlabach grounded out to short, but Dyer used her speed and scored tying the game at one after the first inning.
 
After a scoreless second inning, and a scoreless frame from Fallon Feaser in the top of third, the Falcons looked to break the tie. With one out, Hannah Dyer singled up the middle and then Alexa Burger singled to the shortstop to give runners on first and second with one out. Both Dyer and Burger stole a base and then Kandice Schlabach hit a two-RBI single to give the Falcons a 3-1 lead after the third.
 
The Falcons continued to keep the bats hot in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Ali Wagner reached first after an error by the Blazers pitcher and then Fallon Feaser moved Wagner over to second with a sac bunt to put a runner on second with two outs. Paige Eakes then hit an RBI triple to right field to extend the Falcons lead to three. Hannah Dyer then followed up the triple with an RBI single to give the Falcons a 5-1 lead after four.
 
After Fallon Feaser set the Blazers down in order in the top of fifth, the Falcons offense looked to break open the game. Kandice Schlabach led off the inning with a solo home run to left field to push the Falcons lead to five. After a ground out, Allie Book hit a double to right center. Rebekah Wiley then singled to put runners on first and third with one out. After an Ali Wagner walk loaded the bases, Fallon Feaser hit a sac fly to center that increased the Falcons lead to 7-1, with the runners advancing to second and third on the play. Paige Eakes then hit a two RBI double to give the Falcons the second walk off the day due to the run rule and a 9-1 win.
 
Fallon Feaser pitched all five innings for the Falcons, allowing one earned run on four hits and four strikeouts. Hannah Dyer, Alexa Burger, Kandice Schlabach, and Paiges Eakes each record two hits. Schlabach led the Falcons with four RBIs and Ali Wagner and Dyer led the Falcons with two runs each.
