GRANTHAM, PA. – On Wednesday evening, the Messiah women's volleyball team swept Alvernia for the MAC Commonwealth opening match. The Falcons cruised to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-15) win at home.
Cassidy Dell led the Falcons with 13 kills, while
Emma Swartz put together a nice performance with 38 assists.
Up Next: The Falcons will be back in action for another Messiah Tri-Match on Saturday, Sept. 28.
Set One
The Falcons got off to a strong start against the Golden Wolves.
Cassidy Dell,
Katie Quesenberry, and
Sarah Hart led the Falcons to an early 10-9 lead. As the set continued the Falcons lead further gained. Messiah would go on an 10-4 run to take a 20-13 lead late in the set.
Makenzie Adams and Barnhart were stellar on the front line during the run. The Golden Wolves could not respond to the Falcons offense, as Messiah went on the take the opening set 25-16.
Set Two
The Golden Wolves came out fired up the begin set two, forcing an early Messiah timeout after a 5-1 lead. However, following the stoppage, the Falcons went on an 8-0 run to regain an 9-5 lead forcing an Alvernia timeout. Over the next couple of possessions, both teams exchanged points. However, Messiah still had control of a 15-10 advantage at the midway point. But the Golden Wolves had no answers for Barnhart, Dell, and Adams as the Falcons went on to take set two 25-18.
Set Three
Messiah kept their momentum rolling, after the set two victory. Despite Alvernia's persistent attack, the Falcons were able to take a hold of an early 10-6 lead. From that point on, Messiah kept their foot on the gas extending their lead to 17-10.
Leah Youtzy got involved in the offense picking up a couple of kills. Messiah would close out the set 25-15 on an 8-4 run, to sweep the Golden Wolves in the MAC Commonwealth opener

The Falcons will bring in Penn State Berks and Penn College for another Messiah Tri-Match. First match against Penn State Berks is set for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28th.
